Show THE HEBER ROBBERY A Man Arrested on Suspicion anti 1 Discharged The topic which has entirely engrossed en-grossed the attention of the inhabitants inhabi-tants of this pretty outoftheway town for the past week or so has been the arrest and subsequent discharge of John McNay who was taken on suspicion of stealing between 600 and 700 from his employer John Forgie McNay has for more than two years tended bar and run a saloon here for Mr Forgie and so far as was possible he endeavored to make inoffensive his nefarious trade this together with the reputation ho has gained here for fair and straightforward straightfor-ward dealing has gone far toward relieving re-lieving him of this charge The examination exam-ination took place last Saturday and Monday before Justice Aird and the testimony there elicited was to the effect that the money had been stolen from the cash drawer while Mr McNay who deeps at the saloon was out to supper The robbery was committed between the hours of 730 and 9 oclock and an old ax found within a short distance of the building showed beyond a doubt how the little side door had been pryed in The thief must have been well = acquainted r ac-quainted with the place for without trouble or noise he soon found the cash drawer and rifled it of its contents con-tents Tis just here that suspicion pointed to the bartender the drawer is very long wide and shallow t ana all the small change was ranged in ittle tills in the front At the back in one corner were two sacks one filled with silver the other with gold and in the other corner was a roll of greenbacks in a sack Now the theory of the vo ecu tion was that a person who could rind 0 so many parcels in the dark and seCUre se-cure them all without dropping any who could break open a door without alarming passers by must have been either an expert burglar or that the man who gave the alarm first prepared the situation Mr McNay proved himself V him-self innocent and as I said be fere is discharged he is to be contra ulated There is fCOO re reward offered for the conviction of the real criminal and it is to be hoped that in a short time he will be brought to justics THE cattlemen of Heber seem to find a ready sale for their cattle Mr Hatch has already contracted all his cattle which will be ready for the market this spring The stock do not seem to have suffered much on their new range as reports are most favorable in regard to their condition Until this winter the cattle have been permitted to winter on the Ute Reservation there being plenty of room for all without interfering inter-fering whatever with the Indians Last fall when the stockmen were ordered to find another range consternation reigned among them but pluck and energy will al3Ys win and it found for the ousted bovines a new home Therefore There-fore we rejoiceth muchly I SOCIETY Heber City is very gay this winter One motto seems to prevail Ladies there is no time like the present II Fancy dress balls fancy apron parties and sociables seem to crowd upon anothers heels so fast they follow BUSINESS is brisk but the real estate boom has not struck us yet We are on the lookout LA BIZARRE HEBER CITY February 29th 1883 |
