| Show THE REAL ESTATE MEN Their Interesting Meeting on Tuesday Night TO BOOM THE CITYS GROWTH I Tho Speeches Made What the Chamber of Commerce is Doing Jixcursious from tho East Nearly all of the real estate dealers of this city attended the meeting held at the Chamber of Commerce last night for the purpose of adopting plans to forward the interests of the city At about 8 oclock W H Sells called the meeting to order and read the call Mr Sells was then elected chairman and in assuming position ated that the city was on the eve of an era of great prosperity and it was for the purpose of making that prosperity permanent per-manent that the meeting had been called O J Hollister was elected secretary after which Mr Sells called upon Secretary Secre-tary Forhan for information as to what the Chamber of Commerce was doing Mr Forhan itited that a committee com-mittee had recently been appointed ap-pointed by the Chamber to solicit so-licit contributions to the treasury fund Heretofore tha Chamber had done a great deal to advertise the city and the present prosperity was largely due to this He had susgested that the fund be used in organizing excursions to this city and that a large number of handsomely illustrated pamphlets be gotten out and distributed allover all-over the country and sent by real estate men in reply to letters of inquiry He thought that an effort should be made to organize an excursion excur-sion from St Louis If a large party should leave that city for Salt Lake the event would make noise enough to thoroughly advertise us and would bring thousands of others here If this idea should be adopted the pamphlets referred to would be liberally distributed in the city and advertisements advertise-ments placed in the leading papers there He suggested St Louis for many reasons and if au excursion from that place should be successful excursions excur-sions might then be organized from other cities The great object to attain was to secure low railroad rates and for this he was working The Chamber had also petitioned the City Council for a site upon which to erect a board of trade building and an effort was being made to establish manufactories here which would be necessary to maintain a boom He described how the manufactories in Denver WLhita Minneapolis and other places had been established It was necessary to induce men of capital and energy to start enterprises here How this was to be done was tho thing to consider COL T P MURRAY of Sioux City was called for and in responding said that he had attended the meeting rather to listen than to talk He had only been here about a week but was infatuated with Salt Lake and intended to stay here The people living in this valley did not see and appreciate the advantages advan-tages as strangers did The excursion idea was a long step in advance He thought excursions should be running in here every week The establishment of manufactories was sadly needed Nature had certainly done her part capital and energy must complete it He described the wonderful growth in wealth and population of Sicuc City and said that it was all due to the united action of the businessmen business-men who L ad secured manufacturing and railroad advantages by offering large bonuses There was nothing which made so favorable an impression upon strangers public improvements Salt Lake had the finest site he had ever seen He described the public improvements im-provements made in Sioux City since last March and hoped that the same policy might be pursued here When the excursionists should arrive the mayor and city officials should drive them about tne town and show them its advantages JUDGE BENSON was called for and said that he had not been here long enough to make suggestions Salt Lake City suited him He had been traveling around the globe for a quarter of a cei ury lookm for the promised land and he thought he had found it The real estate men were necessary to the building build-ing up ot the city They had built Minneapolis Denver Sioux City and most of the other live cities and it would be the r SSq l estate men who would i build up Salt LakeCityif was built up I at all They were men who would back their opinion with their money Another factor in the building up of n city was the hotels It struck him that Salt Lake should have a hotel with a capacity and accommodations as large as all tan present hotels It would be of great advantage to the city if the slumbering energies of the residents could be aroused and a hotel company organized MR HOLLISTER was called for and said that he understood the meeting I had been called for the purpose or organizing or-ganizing some sort of a real estate exchange ex-change He had been at work a longtime long-time here but lacked the means to back his faith in the country He compared Colorado with Utah and on the whole thought that Utah possessed greater resources The new comers would have to be depended oa for the development of those resources It remained for such men as Judge Benson and Colonel Murray to bring the capital here and he thought that in twelve years Salt Lake would surpass Denver in population and wealth Nature i Na-ture had pic ed this spot out as a site for a great city and that was what it wa bound to be Salt Lake could hold Ler owr asainst the cities of the west so far as manufactories were concerned All that was required was a united effort ef-fort There were anumber of real esate men in the city and they must keep real estate active but he hoped that prices would not be inflated MR BEnSON said that he did not like the word boom and did not believe in boomsthey meant reaction MB tlI NNCN late of Cheyenne said that he fled come to Salt Lake to stay He was pleased to observe that matters were being talked over and suggested that when the meeting adjourned it would bo to meet again soon for the purpose of adoptingsomeplan to advertise adver-tise tne great internal resources of this country and hoptu that some sort of an organization would be effected for that purpose r C B GOUBIAYJdescribed how he and r f Mr Kinney had attempted to start the North Salt Lake addition and said that their failure was largely due to the lack of unity which existed among the real estate men He was in favor of forming an advertising bureau to be supported by contributions I MK SELLS thought that a committee should be appointed to confer with the Chamber of Commerce with a view of I agreeing upon some definite plan Mr FORHAN said that the Chamber of Commerce was a bond of unity between be-tween the business men and it had been of great benefit to the city and Territory Terri-tory in more ways than one The membership of the Chamber ws to be increased by the admission of lilly new members and he suggested that as the I real estate men had no organization of their own they miht take advantage I of this and If they saw fit form an organization within the Chamer WA STANTON moved that a committee I com-mittee of seven be appointed to confer with a like committee from the Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce as to the best action to be taken in the premises and report to an adjourned meeting The motion was carried and the Chair appointed Messrs Stanton Hollister Wicker sham Murray Benson Pomeroy and Miles JUDGE COLBURN late of Gunnifon said that he was in full accord with all that had been said about the future of this city Ho showed the necessity of an organization whic1 would protect real estate dealers and mrved that a committee of five be appointed to decide de-cide upon a plan of organization and report at an adjourned meeting The motion was carried and Messrs Colburn Hilton Bishop Miner and Wantland were appointed The meeting then a djourned for one week s |
