Show THE ROWING RECORD Garfield BeachBoat Cub Wins the Eastern Rees SUNDAY SIGHT AT LAKE PARK Webber und Osborne Will Bring Home the Laurels of Three American ChampIon ships Out of Five l v The Garfield Beach Boat club which is being represented in the great rowingcon tests on the eastorii water by Messrs Webber and Osborne is distinguishing itself it-self and makinga record to be proud of winning three ont of five of the American championships > As has previously been stated in these columns Vebber and Os bornejwon the championship junior double of the Northwestern Amateur Rowing association as-sociation on thalstinstant Grand Rapids Michigan rowing two miles in 13 minutes and 32 seconds lowering the worlds record 24J seconds The fastest time ever recorded re-corded was 13 minutes and 3SU seconds but the course was short and the record has been thrown out leaving the next best record re-cord 13 minutes and 58X seconds against which time the boys rowed and came in 2 JJ seconds ahead The following day the Garfield Gar-field club entered the senior pair in a two mile race and was defeated onehalf second sec-ond by Clegg and Standish of the Detroits the worlds champions Our boys would have come off victors but for tho fact of their boat becoming waterlogged and they were compelled t < use a strange boat which I was rigged much lower than their own The race was an even on until the lower end of the course was reached when rough water was encountered and the Detroits steadily gained the Garflelds not being able to get their oars out of the water 01 over their knees When smooth water was reached again the rear kept gaining and only lost by onehalf of a second At the end of the first days racing tho betting was five to one in favor of the Garfield Beach club The seventh anniversary regatta of tho National Association of Amateur Oarsmen and the twelfth annual regatta of the Mississippi Valley Amateur Rowing association as-sociation held jointy on Lake Calumet at Pullman Illinois beginning on the 8th instant was the next scene of glorious achievements to the Salt Lake boys The day was rainy and only a portion of the programme was carried out tho remaining races being postponed On the 9th tho Jeli J I Jel si b tt oS Garfields rowed in the National association against the Detroits in a senior pair one and j onehalf 1Pt this lima beating Clegg and Standish the worlds champions thereby relegating them to the exchampionship relegatnA tem to exchmpionship Time 910 In the lat days races August 10 tho Garfields were defeated by the St Pauls in the junior double on account ac-count of their deck giving away and there being no extra boat at hand The Salt Lake boys redeemed themselves however in the senior pair again defeating the Detroits The latter came in in 1055 and the Garfields in 1140 but the race was given t the latter on a foul and the time was not placed on record It is aid that Webber and Osborne were four boat lengths on the return when they met Clegg and Standish going out Instead of making the circuit of the turn the De troits aboutfaced and came in the Gar fields quit rowing and came in leisurely claiming the race on a foul which was conceded con-ceded by the referee To give an idea of what the Garfield Beach boat cub hat to contend with and at what disadvantage they were placed in the contest it is no more than justice to state that the Detroit boat club represented by Clegg and Standish have held the championship cham-pionship in the senior pair since 1878 the honors never having been wrested from them but once before and that was by Appley and Holmes of the Narragansett club of Providence It L in 1SS2 the record rec-ord being 1410X The best record heretofore hereto-fore made in senior pairs was 10 12 in 1SS5 Another disadvantage was thatdl the other crews were attended with captains and trainers while the Salt Lakers had to fight their own battles still they return next week with the laurels of three championships out of a possible five would be the proper thing to give tho boys a grand reception on their aral in the city Malcolm and Gastrich of the Mo docs were given an elegant reception on their return t St Louis after winning a similar championship in 18S7 and our boys deserve as much respect shown them for this Webber and Osborne were offered 150 per month t remain i Grand Rapids but they say Salt Lake is their home and theyare comingbackand it is expected will roto PortlandOregon participate in the Willamette Valley Rowing associations regatta to be held on the 31st Instant Many favorable comments have been made of the Garfield club br the leading eastern papers which denominate Webber nnd Osborne as the two Mormon boys |
