Show CONSULGENERAL TO HAWAII Mr Elaine was Yl Unfortunate in His Selection of I W Severance Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch WASHINGTON Aug 12 Blainc has been unfortunate in the selection of a man to fill I the position of consulgeneral in the Hawaiian Ha-waiian islands News comes noW from Honolulu that Kalakaua declined to receive Henry W Severance as consulgeneral and that his majesty regards the appointment appoint-ment as showing lack of courtesy on the part of tho United States One of the latest issues of the state depart ment register shows that H AV Severance was and had been JunelSCSconsul for the Hawaiian islands at San Francisco Quite recently be was dismisssd from that position by Kalakaua for reasons which have never been made public In speaking of the appointment of Severance Sev-erance the other day a gentleman who understands the situation said that Severance Sever-ance is closely associated with the missionary mission-ary element which has at times sought to degrade and belittle in the eyes of his own people and the world King Kalakaua In securing the appointment of Severance the missionary clement has strengthened its side which is a matter of considerable importance im-portance to them as the elections are closely at hand Severence owes his position to the influ dnco of the missionaries and the family relationship existing between Severance and Blame especially on the family side Blaine commenced his newspaper career I in an office in which Severance acted as typo and reporter They were chums throughout life and always have been fast friends I was by a very narrow chance that Blaine escaped appointing as United States minister to the Hawaiian islands a gentleman gentle-man who was in a similar situation only more so On Juno 20 John A Stevens of Maine was to hare been appointed minister to Hawaii but before that time it had been practically decided to give the appointment to David A McKinley a brother of tho eminent statesman from Ohio In regard to McKinley the stato department register issued in October 1S3 shows that then ho was United States consul at Honolulu having been appointed December 18SO from California The register issued five years later presents a different picture Tn 1SSS when H W Severance was Hawaiian consul at San Francisco McKinley McKin-ley was consulgeneral from Hawaii for California Nevada Oregon and Washington Washing-ton territory He had obtained his appointment ap-pointment from the Hawaiian government July 2 18S5 immediately on being recalled called from the consular service of the United States by President Cleveland From the time of Harrisons election McKinley Mc-Kinley became one of the most persistent and most promising candidates for the position of United States minister to tho Hawaiian Islands Hew an applicant that position while still in tho service of the Hawaiian King with an office in San Francisco under the same roof with Claus Sprockets whoso invoice in the rode between be-tween Hawaii and the United States it was McKinleys duty as Hawaiian consul general to certify These facts taken together present an extraordinary commingling com-mingling of Hawaiian interests with the inserests of tho United States and the interests in-terests of Claus Sprcckels The gentleman seemed to be always ready t transfer his allegiance and services whenever Mr Spreckels desired it t |
