Show SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION The Regular Monthly Meeting Held Monday Evening The Sunday School Union of this stike held last evening was well attended by representatives of the Sunday Sun-day School of tte stake All the city schools wera well represented as also Farmers Ward North Point East Mill Creek Sugar House and Big Cottonwood Cotton-wood The opening and closing singing exercises were excellently rendered by the Nineteenth Ward School choir led by Prof Heesley After prayer the secretary called the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting Elder Alfred Ridges of the Nineteenth Nine-teenth Ward School delivered avery a-very interesting address on the Power 01 Kindness as applied to the government and teaching of children He related several anecdotes illustrating illustrat-ing the power of love in governing children and winning their esteem and obedience Elder Nebeker of the Nineteenth Ward read a appropriate essay on the subject of Primary Teaching The greatest difficulty met in primary work was in fpftinf the attention of the i child which could not ba obtained ob-tained unless sui table language was chosen in which to convey con-vey to the pupils the principles of truth Anecdotes and illustrations could be used with very good effect provided they were appropriate to the lessons brought before the children and were brought forth in language suitable to the understanding of the children Elder James Sf Smith of the Nineteenth Nine-teenth W < ird made a few remarks upon the gift of the Holy Ghost and showed by apt illustration the necessity of Sunday school teachers being led by the spirit of Godin all their labors and ministration among the children President Angus M Cannon expressed the pleasure he felt in attending this meeting He was particularly pleased with the display of intelligence made by the youngspeakers who addressed the congregation this evening He advised ad-vised all Sunday School teachers to be careful not to teach principles beyond their own understanding and the comprehension com-prehension of their pupils It was not pleasing to the Lord to spend our time in controversy and caviling over mysteries but a knowledge of the plain and simple principles of the pnannl shnnM he cnffipiAnt to satisfy the ambition of every elder in Israel Stake Superintendent J C Cutler made a few remarks and the meeting wa adjourned for one month The choir san8 very effectively the i anthem Rock or Ages Benediction by President H S Gow ans of Tooele Stake The pieces to be sang by the congre pat on at the April meeting are Well I Sing All HailandProvidence is OverAll Over-All the Twentieth Ward School to urnishpart of the exercises It is specially requested that those who have not already sent in their school reports for 1886 will do so at once |
