Show THE < CREAMER SEI The Inquest Brings Out Some Startling Facts I GUS KING AS A MILLIONAIRE The Father of the Child Discovered Who Placed It on the Doorstep Door-step The Verdict The sad death of Ella Creamer and the mysterious circumstances connected con-nected with ttf were still a theme for discussion on the streets yesterday and as rumor after rumor became currant Coroner Taylor decided to hold an inquest in-quest He accordingly summoned as a jury to investigate the case Messrs George F Brooks William W Turner and Jesse W Hardy It was decided to hold the inquest at the house in which the girl came to her death 342 E Second South Street and where the body still lay enclosed in an ice box The inquest opened by the calling of DR J A HESBIT His testimony was to the effect that on Sunday morning at 1 oclock a week ago he was called up by Jerry Richardson who took him to Mrs Shulers house on the State Road the same building now notorious as being the scene of the WaltonWilder tragedy cf a few years ago The doctor said when he arrived there he saw Miss Creamerwhowas suffering considerable pain at times I was called again about 5 oclock and when I arrived at the house I found a female child was born Miss Creamer was not in a good condition condi-tion when we placed her in the bed she fainted I remained there until 8 p m and called on her the next day Monday when she appeared to be all right The child was taken from the house on Sunday evening I called once more on Monday evening and saw nothing wrong with her but when I went to the house on Tuesday evening she was gone I saw no more of her until after her death there was a young woman in the room the first time I called on her I believe the child was born prematurely I do not believe anything had been administered to produce pro-duce an abortion I do not know where the child was placed it was very small and was nnrhjins SfiVAtimnntha QUU vau a y uJUuu u cbitd I saw Miss Creamer a couple of years ago she had no relatives here I knew her father in Nevada do not know anythiug of the child left at Dr Benedicts DR WHITE said be was called on Monday forenoon and went to see Miss Creamer she was then at Mrs Shulers and suffering considerable con-siderable pain which I relieved the next time I saw her she was at Miss Halls the child was of premature birth I asked no questions as I did not care to know any more about the case than was necessary neces-sary 1 saw a child on Tuesday I should think it was a seven months child Miss Craemer was much annoyed an-noyed and worried by officious women whose visits very much excited her and from the effects of this excitement she grew rapidly worse and finally died I did not ask who the father of I the child was but I did hear her deny that Jerry Richardson had anything to do with the case if she had not been so badly worried 1 believe she would have recovered did not learn her name until after her death the removal of her from Shulers to this place doubtless had something to do with her death I did not advise her removal she was Dr Nesbits patient had she been mine 1 should have forbidden her removal re-moval JERRY RICHARDSON said One of the doctors I do not now know which said it would be safe to move her and she wanted to get away from Shulers I have known MissJCieamer about three years her father is in Idaho I telegraphed to him she came to me two or three weeks ago and told me her condition I advised her to leave town this she would not do and I told her to confide in some woman she did so and the woman advised her to leave she tried to keep herself from disgrace I think her bathing in the lake so frequently had something to do with the premature prema-ture birth she told me she thought the cold water of the lake had caused her sickness he said when she came to his room on Saturday evening she told him of her trouble and he promised to do all he could to aid her I gave her the sofa and went for a physician Dr Nesbit came she was alone when the child was born after that there were a couple of ladies present she was moved at about 1130 Monday night CORONER TAYLOB Do you know what was done with the child RICHARDSON evasivelyI dont know where it is CORONER TAYLOB Yon know who took it away RICHARDSON Yes sir A millionaire here whose name I do not know took the child he did not want its parentage known I dont know what day it was Sunday or Monday it was her desire that the man should take the child she was very highspirited and wilful and I yielded to her wishes because she was so weak CORONER TAYLORWho took the child away Richardson paused for a moment and then said Miss Hall took it a tal man came and got the child Monday night the child was not taken to Miss Halls with the mother it was brought there about 9 oclock it may have been taken away Tuesday night I am not sure I have been by Miss Creamers ledside mostof the time I was merely her friend never took her to the Lake danced with her once at Lake Park a couple of months ago she has been there since then and on one occasion got left there all night at least so she told me she never told me who the childs father was two women i who came to see her asked her if 1 was and she said no She was bothered very much by visits from strangers and these made her very ill the child appeared to be healthy enough MRS SARAH HULL was called Her testimony did not throw any more light on the matter than did that of the previous witnesses she saw the child 6n Sunday and clothed it it appeared perfectly healthy Miss Creamer once boarded with me and = V and afterwards went to Mrs Crock L welli I do not know whetherMiss Creamers child was leftat Dr Bene dicts some think it was Miss Creamer has been at the lake frequently fre-quently and told me it had been great injury to her I never suspected her condition she was highspirited and proud I dont suspect any particular 0 partic-ular person she told me she looked on Mr Richardson as a brother MISS EMMA HALL never asked the name of the man who took the child do not know that he left it at Dr Benedicts heard the child had been taken to New York the man who took it asked me for it saying it was a j nicelooking baby he asked who its father was and 1 told him I did not know he did not see the mother she was asleep at the time I dont know how he learned about the child he was a tall lightcomplexioned man I un derstood he was wealthy he did not tell me anything except that the child would be cared for he left no money for the mother the child was taken away before the mother came the man came here only once he was going into the room to see the mother but as she was asleep he did not go I dont know how he went away JUROR BROOKS Ton are making con tradictory statements Why do you say the child was taken away before the mother was brought to yaur house and then say that two hours before she came the man started into see her but did not because she was asleep Miss HALLThe mother was here when the child was taken away the man was about 301 should say I never saw him in Miss Creamers company I have seen him in town during the summer sum-mer Miss Creamer left no word for 6 her parents she was satisfied with what r was done with the child she did not want to keep it when the man went away I do not think anyone saw him take the baby its mother knew he was here she gave me her ring and told me to wear it always I have known her since February have seen her at the lake frequently my sister has been with her she was in the water three weeks ago A MISS HALL sister of the preceding witness was called and examined but neither her testimony nor that several other witnesses wit-nesses shed any further light on the matter EMMA HALL was recalled and in answer to a question ques-tion by City Attorney Ferguson Isnt it a fact that you took the child away yourself broke into tears and said yes following it by the assertion that she would tell all the truth and finally declaring she would say no more until Gus King came She then went on to say that Gns King came and said he had a place for the child He was to come at a certain time but failed and Miss Hall went after him He came and suggested taking it 10 < Dr Benedicts Bene-dicts and said it would not do for him but he told Miss Hall to do it He promised to attract the doctors attention atten-tion while she deposited the baby at his house She went at 11 oclock and laid the child on the step rang the bell and waited till she saw a light coming down stairs Then she left She wrote the letter herself Gus King told her next day the child had been taken by a millionaire to New York Miss Hall then went onElla told me before she died the name of the father of the child It was Tommy Needham At this juncture au adjournment was taken till 5 oclock in order that GUS KING might be summoned On reassembling the witness was on hand He said that the statement of Miss Hall in regard 4 gard to himself was correct He had promised Mr Richardson that he would call and see Miss Hall and did so He called in reference to the disposal dis-posal of the baby He suggested the idea of taking it to Dr Benedict Had never seen Miss Creamer He did not know whether he had suggested the writing of the note or not but was certain cer-tain that he did not write it Never saw the note until it was shown to him by Dr Benedict HENRY W SADLEE was then called He stated that on the Saturday night mentioned he was sleeping at Mr Richardsons room was sleeping with Mr Gouley Mr Richardson occupied another room adjoining the one where he slept At about 4 oclock Sunday morning he was aroused by Mr Elicharoson who told him that there was a lady in his room who was very sick and asked Mr Gouley to go for a doctor After waiting some time Mr Richardson asked him to go and get Gouley to hurry up He did so and was not in the room afterwards He had known Miss Creamer for two years but had not seen her for over a year and did not know with whom she kept company He knew Mr Richardson was acquainted ac-quainted with her and supposed he called on her occasionally THE JURY after a short consultation rendered a verdict stating that Miss Creamer died at No 312 East Second South Street at about 12 m on the 27th day of August AD 1887 fromgthe effects of premature birth and forlack of proper care and attention after parturition u |
