Show POTTER WILL NOT DOWN I The Fast Train Has Been Put onto on-to Stay CHICAGO November 15VicePresi dent Potter of the Union Pacific was in the city yesterday en route to the east where he goes to consult with the directors and president in relation to the affairs of the company He has been absent in the west for the past six weeks looking over property and devoting de-voting the most of his time to arranging arrang-ing details for the fast passenger train between Omaha and Portland and San Francisco Referring to the efforts made to induce him to pull oil the train Mr Potter who had just received a telegram trom Ogden conveying information infor-mation of its arrival at that point on time it being the first train under the new schedule said The fast train has been put on the Onion Pacific to stay and it will not be pulled off under any circumstances E competitors wish to shorten up their time I have no objections if they attempt at-tempt to meet it by catting the rates we will meet the cuts by our regular trains which make the same tune The Union Pacific is not going to be deterred by threats from running the train as scheduled Referring to financial matters mat-ters he expressed him Elr as much gratified with the outlook He was not disturoed by the Manitobas new tariffs That line had not reached Helena 1 Mont yet and would be properly taken care of when it got there The consequences to follow had been largely magnified The prospects for the Union Pacific were excellent and if let alone it would soon prove its capacity for growth and revenue The Northern Pacific Road it is stated has also decided to shorten its time between St Paul and Portland The changes will be made next Sunday when a fast train will be put on making mak-ing the westbound trip between the two cities in two days and three hours a shortening of twentyone hours The trip from St Paul to Helena which now requires fortysix hours will be made in forty hours The eastbound trip will be shortened seventeen hours I The trouble with the companys trains heretofore has been that they have I stopped at every little station Tt new fast trains will stop at Important stations only The shortening up oi the time between Omaha and San Francisco by the Union and Central Pacific lines promises to create a good deal of feeling among the competing roads A meeting oi inc I managers will be held here tooav when it is expected a crisis will li e reached The indications are that then will be a war on transcontinental passenger pas-senger ratesPost Now if Mr Potter will kindly turn his eagle eye in the direction of his Utah Northern branch and take note of the growls of discontent to be heard all along the line over the change he will place Utah still more in the list of his debtors and make us all feel like giving him an approving pat on hh ample back |
