Show THE AGRICLL ORAL COLLEGE Some Utah County Towns Pat in a Bid The natural facilities of Spanish Fork and its environs for agricultural and horticultural purposes are quite proverbial pro-verbial A proper sense of this tact and a desire for the establishment of the Agricultural College provided for by the late Congress of the United States incite the inhabitants of Spanish Fork Salem Piyson Benj tuna and LakeShore Lake-Shore to offer inducements to the Territorial Terri-torial Legislature and petition that honorable body to c use said institution institu-tion to be located on a lovely site on the south side of Spanish Fork River ana about one and onehalf miles southwest of dpanidh Fork City On Thursday tho 9th inst committees from the abovewarned settlements convened con-vened in the City Hall Spanish Fork City to confer upon that subject Tne meeting was called to order by R P Snell and on motion proceeded to organize as follows Chairman II P Suell secretary Sam L Page Ou motion the secretary read an article ar-ticle in THE SAT LAKE HERALD of the date of February 4th bearing on the suhject to be discussed Mr Martell reported the action taken by the citizens of Spanish Fork in the matter stating that o 311 had been subscribed by them The secretary read a letter from R J Nuttall reporting 100 subscribed by i the cit zensof Salem W McClilliu reported that he was not fu ly prepared aa yet to state the exact amount subscribed by toe citizens of Pbyaou Since that time reported 1400 subscnoed W Hickiuttn reported 620 subscribed by Beujuiniu Mr Argyle reported 182 subscribed by Lake chore Tee house was unanimous in selecting select-ing the location of the experimental farm Mr Martell moved that a committee of rive be elected to draft a petition to the Legislature the representatives ol each settlement to nominate one of their own number The motion prevailed pre-vailed On motions severally put and curried the following were elected members of said comm ttee Thomas H Wilson Payson G W Hickman Benjamin Lorerze Argyle Lake Shore Thomas D l Martell and W 0 Creer Spanisk Fork The committee retired to their room and on returning reported a petition drafted On motion the petition was read and with some amendments was adopted On motion R P Snell and Thomas C Martell were elected a committee to transmit the petition to our representatives representa-tives in the Legislature and forward a synopsis of th proceedings of this meeting to be published as also a copy of the petition R P SNELL Chairman SAM L PAQfc Secretary The petition reads as follows To the Honorable the Legislature of Utah Territory in session convened GentlemenWe your petitioners a committee com-mittee duly authorized by the Inhabitants of Spanish Fork tialem Benjamin and Lake Shore respectfully represent that WHEREAS the late Congress of the United States enacted that the sum of fifteen thousand thou-sand dollars bior annually appropriated appropri-ated to and for the benefit of agricultural colleges in the Stat sand s-and Territorities severally for the express purpose of augmenting the agricultural interests of the county in an intelligent and scientific manner and WHEREAS the conditions of said enactment enact-ment require those receiving the benefit of said appropriation to provide an ugrlcul tural school or farm Therefore your petitioners do hereby agree to appropriate the sum of five thousand thou-sand dollars for the benefit of said institution institu-tion providing your honorable body cause location to DO on the tract of land briefly described as > follows A tract of land of suf cleat area lying on the south side of Spanish Span-ish Fork Hirer and about one and onehalf miles southwest of Spanish Fork City end situated centrally between the above named settlements and within half a mile of the Utah ieutral < and within a short distance of the Denver Rio Grande Railroad Rail-road Its altitude being at the desirable height of 1556 feet gives it n commanding view of the entire valley with its numerous cities well tilled farms produciivo orchards and extensive meadows and is in close prox im ltv to its beautiful abounding in fish Said tract slopes in three directions thus favoring it with various climatic influences and contains several kinds of soil all of which are highly adapted for experimental analyses and the maturity of crops such as cereals tubers fruit grapes etc It affords excellent water powers good irrigation rights and only awaits the well driver to send forth gushing streams of pure artesian water such as arc quite numerous num-erous in the vicinity Therefore your petitioners respectfully ask that your honorable body favorably consider this presentation locate the agricultural agri-cultural college fur Utah ou the grounds of j the above described site an l for the accomplishment ac-complishment of the object of onr petition we respectfully ask that you appoint a committee com-mittee to
