Show r WHEEL NOTES Ii < r 0 BUSINESS MCN clerks professionals and others are every day joining the ranks of wheelmen and the universal regret is that they did not do so sooner Verily t the bicycle has become a factor in social and political economy WE HAVE frequently been asked by nonriderf the names of the prominent j types of bicycles For the benefit of f these and others who would no doubt g be pleased to know we mention the 1 more prominent viz 1 I j1 THE CRANK or Ordinary Tais is the commonest form of bicycle and is known 10 almost everybody Has large wneel in front a curved backbone with small wheel in trail Is propelled by cranks and pedals attached J at-tached rigidly to the wheel It is best Ii known here as the Columbia type I although there are more than fifty other makers who use the same THE STAR Has the little wheel in front the large wheel being set in a frame and is piopelled by levers and clutch The object of the former being to obtain safety irom headers the latter to obtain ob-tain a continuous instead of intermittent intermit-tent power making it more readily drivable up hill as well as being safer going down hill It will be seen that the above two contain the essentials of all cycles viz 1riving with front wheel and steering with same Driving with hind wheel and steering with I front from these spring the following types f THE KANGAROO wheel about 42 I inches in diameter the forks being extended I ex-tended below the centre to which pedals are attached power being transmit trans-mit d by a chain and sprocket wheels j These wheels are called safeties v which is a misnomer They are unpopular f un-popular at present HOVER TYIE After the crank and I Star this type has come to be the most popuar of any and js destined to stay Within this column are mentioned two wheels of the Rover type viz The Veloce Columbia and the Victor Safety i The essentials of Safety are Smaller wheels so that feet go within five inches of ground seat midway between wheels steering with front wheel chain and sproket wheels driving hind wheel easy to mount and dismount and com fortableto ride THE LADIES BICYCLE is of this type but it is modified as follows The backbone or reach instead of coming com-ing up in such a manner as to be ridden i astride is curved down much like a capital J so that it can be mounted very easily from the front more easily than the gentlemans wheeland the shape of the frame or reach admits ad-mits of the dress A lady looks really cute and not a particle awkward whn riding The machine is very easy to learn and will become very popular The pedals and chain are perlectly covered cov-ered with wire cloth to avoid any possibility pos-sibility of entangling the skirts The makers are already behind with orders but have promised one within a month to Miss Hose Johnson of this city We hope to present a cut of the mactine next week PEMBROKE received two new 48inch Star bicycles last week a full nickel for Mr J V Long end 5 nickel for Mr K J Woods both Era very nice machines ma-chines THE BUN to Becks Hot Springs every Sunday morning is verv enjoyable and the bathing is royal rhose wishing togo to-go should be af the Valley House corner cor-ner at 8 oclock sharp Cleanliness is next to Godliness THE ROADS are in splendid condition for moonlight riding now THE NEW Veloce Columbia received by Barnes Davis last week is a very neat and serviceable wheel It is of the Rover type of cycle and has both wheels near tho same size It is especially es-pecially desirable to elderly or stout gentlemen and is destined to have a large sale as manifest by the number already sold in the east The Victor Safety is of the same Rover type perhaps you have seen it standing in front of E J Swaner and Coa jewelry store on Main Street |
