Show JI 1 l 1 DICKSONS REMOVAL J i The rumor widely circulated in town r on Thursday to the effect that District Attorney ckson had been removed j t was doubtless born of awish that he would be displaced THE HEUALU does i I not believe that Mr Dicksons will be I II ass among the names early dropned from the government payroll Mr Dickson is quite as cunning as he capable and he would be offended if any one were to suggest that he is not a clever politician who understands the tricks of office getting and of holding on The gentleman gentle-man is decidedly Republican in his instincts training and affiliations but he is shrewd enough to know that it paysjust as much to be district attorney under a Democratic as under a Republican Repub-lican administration If one will take the pains and trouble to examine the newspapers he will learn that the past five months cover the ground of Mr Dicksons greatestactivity in the prosecution prose-cution of polygamists and that the same period embraces the time since Mr Cleveland was elected to the Presi i I dency At no time in the gentlemans I previous career as District Attorney did he display such deep interest and earnestness in punishment of the muchlymarried Saints The meaning of this is not difficult to fathom He wanted to make it appear to the new administration that in case it was desirous desir-ous of waging vigorous warfare against the Mormons he would bean be-an efficient and useful officer The other string to his bow is one that is political in the broadest sense If Cleveland should instanter remove Mr Dickson while the newspapers news-papers are sounding his praises as a prosecutor of polygamists the cards have been played in such a way that the President would come in for lively censure for having checked the satisfactory satisfac-tory progress being made and the Democracy would be abused for sheltering shelter-ing the Mormons while Mr Dickson and his Republican associates would endeavor to turn a point in favor of their party Consider the course of the District Attorney and then say if he has not played the game in a way to be retained in cffice or make it count for his party and against the opposition incase in-case he is removed How well lIe will succeed remains to be seen We are inclined in-clined to believe that he has worked the act so succesfully that his removal from office will not take place In the near future |
