Show NO MORMON SEED APPLY Captain Bailey the Commissioners Pet Lass Down an Important Principle ot the G A R Mr Francis Johnston of Midway called at THE HERALD office last evening even-ing and related the following itfoVms its own comment on the gushing liberality liber-ality of a local organization usually first and foremost in its denunciations of everything hidebound and narrow spirited I came into the city a few days ago said Mr Johnston and was introduced bj Major Gorliuski to several gentlemen I of the G A R who were connected with the Grant Memorial Procession I happened to mention that I had been in the late war and when I said that I enlisted en-listed May 23 18QOin the Fourth United States Cavalry fought in twent one battles and was discharged May 23rd 1865 they told me that 1 should decidedly decid-edly enter the procession of the day in the ranks of the G A R they accordingly accord-ingly gave me a badge of mourning with the other insignia and I marched in the procession with the rest of them Today went into the office of Captain T C Bailey on some land homesteading homestead-ing business and the question came up about my war record I made some inquiries with a view to joining the G A R here and asked the Captain what were the conditions of membership member-ship He surprised me by saying Are you a Mormon I replied that I wa Then we couldnt accept you lIe said saidBut But said 1 they never made any such inquiry of me when I enlisted to serve the country nor was my religion questioned dunng the whole time of my service It was not matter Captain Bailey said I could not enter the G A R here if I was a Mormon Itold him that his brother previous to his death had examined my discharge and said it was one of the most honorable he had leenin ten years but that was of no avail The fact of my being a Mormon in the Captains eyes rendered all this as so much blank paper THE HERALD staff joined as one man in attempting to brace Mr Johnston up under the terrible blow hohad sustained sus-tained and before lIe left the office he gave encouraging s of becoming ultimately ul-timately resigned to the frightful necessity neces-sity of remaining outside the ranks of I the Utah GAR < |
