Show THAT RATIFICATION > t c t f A 4 1 4The The fleeting on Second South Last EATening + 1 AN APPEAL TO THE CITIZENS Speeches by Messrs < Uawllns Heno f i diet Alfales Younc and John Sr Young I As announced yesterdays HERALD a meeting of Young and Old Democracy Demo-cracy was held fn front of the Democrat office on Second South street last evening even-ing As no hour was set for the speeches the audience was a little late in gettingthere although the Opcrn House band did good service in the afternoon by parading the streets and serenading different parties THE hERALD among the number A Cleveland and Hendricks banner was stretched accrcss the street and a number of Chinese lanterns displayed At 840 Mr Bambercer called the assemblage to order arid nominated for chairman Mr Sheeks whQ took his I position with a few remarks in the course of which lIe said there has never been a good government save that in which the people participated Referred Re-ferred to the halfmasting of the Fourth and used severe censure in connection con-nection therewith < On motion Mr Easly was elected secretary sec-retary Mr Rawlins being loudly called for came forward and was introduced to the crowd He was nominated he said as one of the members of the Legislative Legisla-tive Council and although he thought it was impossible to succeed had permitted per-mitted his name to be used in order to give voters of this district an oppor trinity to discover whether they were Democrt as many of them had professed pro-fessed to be The mass of the people he believed claimed to be Democrats We stand upon the theory that all just governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed We b heye the people themselves should determine de-termine as to how they should be coy erned As Democrats we stand upon this We believe in liberty but in liberty governed by law that it is the duty of every man to obev the laws of this country until by legitimate agitation agita-tion those laws if they be obnoxious may be repealed We have in this Territory Ter-ritory a party calling itself the Peoples Party I would hold out the idea that everything opposed to it was necessarily bad Since the Territory of Utah was organized it has had undisputed sway had full control of all the offices and made all the laws l the name of the leoples Party had been synonymous with the people if the officers hail been elected by the pceple instead of by individuals in-dividuals the affairs of the Territory would have been in a better condition than they are While the Peoples Peo-ples Party had held sway it had subjugated the will of the people We saw and have continued to see tickets prearranged by individuals who have abrogated to themselves the right so to do Few men in that party have dared to speak out their own feelings or if they have done so that action has been the signal for their instant in-stant ostracism Some of us who are candidates have everything here we have nothing anywhere else We have BO interest save in common with the people of Utah I is a matter of indifference to me whether I am elected or not but every man should have aright a-right to cast his vote as he pleases We I take to ourselves the right to govern and no man should say us nay The man who has individual judgment and stands by his idea is worthy of very respect A man should have the privilege privi-lege of expressing his views Which do you prefer On one hand a party in power claimirgobeaience in all things on the other hand a party who gives you all the rights you could possibly desire I may not be that during dur-ing my lifetime any one will be able to hold office in this territory as a Democrat Demo-crat but this is no reason why this agitation agi-tation should not be kept up until some advance has been made Which do you prefer If you adhere to the Peoples party you may be abie to hold office Is the halfmasting of a flag a delightful spectacle anyone man We have seen many men who dare not express their honest convictions Referred to the recent re-cent actions of the grand jury at Paris Idaho condemning the Mormons who recently wrote the letters to the judge Every member of the Peoples Party must accede 10 the demands of the Church no matter what those demands may be The history of Utahs Legislature Legisla-ture is the history of a failnre and he claimed that a great many of the evils now afflicting the people were brought about by themselves in their I failure to send more capable I capa-ble men to make their laws Scarcely a law had been passed that did not show the iucompetency its maker and if the people had taken the interest they should have done these laws would have been dr rent The Peoples Party thrusts religion down the peoples throats Religion should not be used or breathed during apolitical a-political campaign Government had given a pledge not tointerfere with religion re-ligion and religion should not interfere inter-fere with the government Wheat care I what you believe as long as yon are honest in that belief I the candidates tn our ticket arc not worthy of office do not vote for them but for Gods sake do not say I will not vote for a man because he does notbelone to the same religious sect as I do Referred to the beauties of the Democratic platform and said Congress had deliberated and made up their minds what to do and he called upon good citizens of all classes to use their best efforts to avert the impending disasters There are 1 many men i the Peoples Party who i ought not to be there and they should come out declare their true sentiments and stand by them sentment do this cannot fail to attain len respect of all good people and the other class were not worth noticing We hope to make this canvass as lively as possible auJ desire the cooperation of all who would help relieve the Territory Terri-tory from the terrible incnbuss now fastened upon it Loud cries were here heard for Benedict Bene-dict Benedict and Music The
