Show 1 t NQ COMMISSION I I I 1 The people of Utah we trust are duly grateful to those generous and self sacrificing politicians who are exerting themselves to prevent the infliction V upon Territory of legislative commission com-mission and we also trust our honest citizens are equally appreciative of the efforts of those other seltsacrificing politicianswho are pleding and scheming schem-ing to bring upon ns just such a commission I com-mission But while about it we might as well remark that in this matter both gratitude and resentment are wanted There is a little likelihood of a legislative legisla-tive commission being imposed upon Utah as there is of Governor Murray i Mastering the science of mathematics We do not know how to put the case in any stronger light It must be borne in mind that the present COJress has just seven weeks more of life a period of existence not r lialf 4ong enough in wiucniio perform half the work that is eminently more important to the members and to the F country then would be anything that might be done with reference to Utah f JTime will be so valuable from now until t 1 1 March 4th that a Utah measure would I f stand as much chance of getting through either house as Ingersoll does I t of going to heaven when the grim reaper shall gather him in With the iezpiration of this Congress dics the Ito 1 publican administration if not the Republican Re-publican party and that demise is a i guaranty that snch infamous propositions t proposi-tions as that involving a legislative 10 < commission for the government of a free and intelligent community of 00000 people will note thereafter mentioned as among the probabilities On March 4th Democracy assumes its rightful place at the head of the nation na-tion and will thenceforth guide and direct affairs It is not meant to be conveyed by this that the general government will let up4in the I warfare against the peculiar institution of this commonwealth on the contrary i we do not and never have believed that 1 1 t the Democrats will be kinder or more h a considerate in their treatment of the I I Mormons than the Republicans have l been but it is no part of Democratic doctrine policy or practice to violated violate-d 1 the best principle of government in order to accomplish a purpose However < < How-ever severe the Democrats may be in t dealing with the Mormon problem they will keep within the letter and spirit of I the law and party policy in which latter the legislative commission scheme cant I can-t j find no place |
