LOGAN April 4 1885 For the second time within a year Logan has been privileged to have vast multitude of the within her gates a people from all parts of the Territory The event being an unusual one for this sectidh the gathering was an unusual un-usual one Arrivals from the settlements settle-ments continued all morning wagon after wagon filled with pleasant faces H and honest hearts rattled up me beautiful I beau-tiful thoroughfares and deposited their contents in front of the Tabernacle which at the hour of 10 oclock was already The ready well filled with people stand was occupied by Apostles F D Richards F M Lyman and H J Grant Of the local state presidency there were present C 0 Card and Orson Smith The choir sang Praiso to our Redeeming Re-deeming Lord APOSTLE F D KICUABDS remarked for that circumstances were favorable the present gathering While some of I the leaders were unable to be present the Spirit of God should be caught bj those who were assembled the congregation con-gregation of those who trusted in God who relied on the arm of Jehovah for aid and succorin carrying out of Hi purposes The speaker remarked that the condition and situation of the people reminded him of trees some of the tallest of the treesfelt the force of the wmd and storm more than the smaller and weaker ones The purposes of Jehovah were not known to the ordinary notal but the indcations were sufficient to enable those who desired to live their rel gion to see that the Almighty was working for the good and blessing His people The Saints had no occasion for worry or trouble the family heads had more need than ever for prayer While there are those who followed up the Church for what they could make they should be taught that their questionable subsistence sub-sistence was well known The Lord had always borne the Saints through their trials and tribulations and sanctified the past to the benefit of the people He concluded bv saying it was good to take the Lords chastisement as well as His blessings He hoped all would return home from Conference edified and blessed ELDER DAVID GASKOX spoke for a I short time saying first that he I desired an interest in the prayers 1 of the Saints assembled He would represent rep-resent the people in the Stake of St George The people of the Stake were living in strict observance of the principles prin-ciples of the Gospel The Stake extended ex-tended over a large tract of country He had often reflected upon the situation situa-tion and asked himself what would be done by the enemies of the people to bring abQut the best interests of the Kingdom of God on earth He referred with emphasis to the wavering and weak kneed Saints who were negligent in their duties and who were working for the accomplishment of the designs of the devil God would come forth and vex the nations with a sore and a grievous Vexation The absence of some of the leaders was remarked upon He recited a circumstance of his experience ex-perience while at J5eaycr While there the business accomplished by the Grand Jury was very light their actions were overruled by God He was working in the interest of the Saints who observed ob-served the law and commands of their Heavenly Father He advised all to listen to the whisperings of the still small voice Abraham was tried in the offering ot his son Isaac with a sacrifice which no other mortal ever was The persecutions by the enemies of the Saints were referred to and the I speaker said they would be overruled for the good of the Saints SILAS S SMITH President of the San Luis Stake began by saying he relied I on the faith and prayers of the Saints He represented the San Luus Stake and rehearsed some of the difficulties I the people thereof had experienced in making the new settlements of that section The scarcity of labor was a drawback to the thrift of the pioneers of that district of country The people where not discouraged howeverjthey endeavored to live according to the mind and will of God they were prospering pros-pering in the work of building up Zion Elder Smith was not a speaker he was a worker and in the work in which he was engaged he felt confident con-fident of eventual triumph Heclosec by hoping all would liveso asto secure I the blessings of the Almighty ELDER W W CLUFF desired to be led by the Spirit of the Lord that he might say something of benefit to himself him-self and his hearers The experiences the Saints were passing through at the present were expected by them they were foretold thaprornises and sayings of the servants of God in the past The unprejudiced in the world as well as others were surprised at the feeling against the Mormon people He had met with a gentleman from Australia who had expressed himself as surprised at the animosity manifested towards the little hand ul of subjects in Utah The Latterday Saints were not surprised sur-prised they looked for what was now transpiring it had been foretold Those who were cognizant of the promises of God were award that the Lord had an overruling providence extended over the Saints which would be shown to both those who lived faithfully and those who were fighting against the God of the Saints The present warfare of the evil one would be continued kept up and increased until Satan was overcome over-come and bound President Cluff referred re-ferred to the evidences of the prov idences of the Almighty in ancient days especially m the days of David and Shadrach Meshach and Abednego and made reference to the birth and life of Moses The enemies I or God and truth tried to destroy the child Jesus King Herod and the lawmakers of that period endeavored en-deavored to destroy the infant Jesus but how they were disappointed can be learned from the Scriptures Elder ClnfTremarked that the dispersing and scattering of the Saints in the early days of the Church the imprisoning and persecution of the leaders in those days the following up of the Saints with all sorts of harrassing and perse cution gavetothe world In those days satisfaction to them in believing that the Church was extinguished But what was their astonishment at finding that the Saints were still thriving and prospering Elder Cluff thought they 1 would be just as dissappointed in tLeir efforts toliarrass and annoy theSaints their endeavors to thwart the purpose of God would be eventually overruled 1 over-ruled The wisdom of Gpd was mani fested in a mysterious way but it was clear to those who lived in accordance with his mind and will There were certain things permitel and allowed by the Almighty for a purpose 1 he Saints bad cause for rejoicing in the work of building and establishing the kingdom of God on the earth ana he hoped all would so live as to secure the btessngs of God in so doing ELDER N C FLYGAKE of Ogden was pleased with the privilege of meeting with the people in the Conference The peculiar times in which the Saints lived were remarked upon and the speaker observed that persecution was the lot of the faithful Peace and prosperity had been enjoyed by the Saints for oyer thirty years and if they now experienced experi-enced some difficulty and were incon venienced by I the action or ouismere n was nothing more than was to be expected ex-pected The Saints have to be tried and prepared to carry on the work in this life and in the world to come The work being done today will have a good effect on the Latterday Saints Many of the leaders and fellowlaborers were being deprived of the society of their friends and associates but this fact more firmly united the Saints and solidified the anks of the faithful The inhabitants of Utah were made up from I arrivals from all parts of the world the people had come to work in the I interests of the Kingdom of God The Saints should not forget this They should remember their covenants cove-nants and obligations they should I advance and grow in the work of salvation of mankind The hereafter was the grand object of every good Latterday Saint each one of whom should renew his or her covenant and live closer tp God build me and thou up observe the laws and commandments command-ments of the Almighty The work of the Lord would roll forth grow and spread until it filled the earth Elder Flygare felt there were others who coma edify the congregation better than I than he and he closed I The choir sang the anthem 1 I will sins of thejncrcies of the Lord Benediction by Apostle H J Grant The afternoon was taken up by addresses ad-dresses by Elders Junius F Wells of Salt Lake Abram Hatch of Wasatch E D Woolley of Kanab W G Smith of Morgan and John Nicholson of Salt i Lake The first speaker devoted all his time to the subject of education in the principles of Mormonism He wanted weight reasons abundant testimony and the most convincing evidence to draw him from the path he md chosen The cry of wolf wolf was being raided by our enemies to care tile aamUs rom their legitimate pursuits The young men and women of Utah with but few exceptions were true and faithful to the principles they had espoused If anybody had anything better to offer him than Mormonism altorded he would accept it He had been taught to honor his parents who had been stigmatized stig-matized as being among the worst people peo-ple upon the face of the earth The speaker grew warm on the subject of consciousness of the members of the Church which he said God had estab fished on earth for the last time PRESIDENT ABRAM HATCH said he had been identified withthe Church ever since boyhood He was confident that God was guiding this people who were in His hands it was for His servants who were at the helm to say what was best He reviewed he exodus of the Saints from Itauvoo and characterized it as remarkable What was I that move for For polygamy No I Thought the Saints should govern and control affairs hereas they were entitled to Hoped all members of the Church would devote their time to the perpetuation perpetu-ation of the Gospel Wasatcn Stake was in good comdition The Indians were friendly to the Mormons and were being preached to ELDER E D WOOLLEY of Kanab repotred affairs to be in good condition in his Stake which embraced but few eople but said that the few were aints He related instances in the history of the Church of President Brigham Young sayirig that the time would came when a person could travel through Utah and never leave sight of houses that the canals would be made from Utah Lake to furnish water for I Salt Lake County that being a natural reservoir When he came north he thought he saw that prophecy verified He thonghti here would be no breaking up of the communities in Utah they ere too firmly established in the mountains The next speaker was Elder WG Smith of Morgan who said lie represented repre-sented good people Nine wards comprised com-prised the Stake Disadvantages of the climate had to be contended with no fruit could be raised there but they could produce the finest potatoes in the country Related his experience in the I earlydays of the = Church His father and brother were killed at the Hauns i Mill massacre He exhorfed the people to be prayerful Said the Saints were free that they were made so by the gospel He further spoke of union and the necessity of the Saints working in harmony He told of meeting a gentleman who said I like yon Mormons Mor-mons but if youll renounce polygamy I will like you better The past history his-tory of the Church showed that roly gamy was not the cause of the persecutions persecu-tions in early days The address of the day was made by Elder John Nicholson He began by saying thut he was encouraged by pres eut appearances The references to prophetic utterances made by the previous pre-vious speakcrshe said might enlarged on indefinitely He believed the time relerreu to wnen the savior would come a second time when the Saints should lift up their heads and rejoice for the hour of their redemption was nigh was at hand The sisns of the times pointed to the fulfillment of this i thospirit of peace was being withdrawn from the nations of the earth and selfishness was being manifested by the national governments I govern-ments who were grasping for territorial aggrandizement They were arming on a scale never before witnessed nation was pitted against nation and kingdom against kingdom The time was coming when there would be no peace except in Zion The speaker referred to the pronbecy of Moroni who said that secret combinations would arise whose object would be to murder He cited the existence of dynamiters and other organizations as1 fulfillment of these predictions He said that fear had seized the public thatgreat men could not travel abroad without serveillance Light had come into the world and cotemporary with it had come the adversary to combat it He coincided with all the remarks made on the necessity of unity among the Saints Except ye are one ye are not mine said Jesus and that saying was ever true He deemed the purification of the ranks of the Church extremely necessary the hypocrite the slanderer the traitor and those who carried water on both shoulders should be rooted out and cut off from the Church They should be broneht to an admiSsion admis-sion ot one thing or the other He had nothing to say against those who were working against the Church except that he hoped those in the1 Church would work as eealously for it as theY were working against it He hoped he would never turn traitor to his fellow religionists traitors he said were worse than snakes that crawled ann poisoned all their surroundings sur-roundings He counselled all to be firm in defending the cause of truth byword by-word and if necessary by deed An anthem was sung and the seryices were dismissed Apostle John W Tay offering the binedi tion The Conference then adjourned until Sunday at 10 oclock LOGAN SOILS A YELLOW flag in front of Geo W
