Show THE REASON WHY I 1I THE HERALD some time ago said and with reference to Judge Powers other appointments by MrA Cleveland who rere not s satisfactory to the administration ad-ministration that the i President would I send the nominations all in to the Senate Sen-ate rather than confess that he had Fl been imposed upon or made bad selections selec-tions The Washington Star evidently speaking with better authority than common rumor verifies the above which has since been demonstrated to be correct by the Presidents course The Star says Mr Cleveland holds tl1l tit i t-it is for the purpose of scrutinizing appointments ap-pointments more carefully than he can have an opportunity of doing that the power of confirmation was vested ix the Senate but aside from that fact he does not want to be put in the attitude of having made appointments during the recess just to give men temporary placesappointments which he would not have made had the Senate been in session If the appointments are bad he will + make nothing by withholding them from the Senate as by so doing he would only protect the endorsers upon whose recommendation the appointments = ap-pointments were made and assume all the responsibility himself This he does not propose to do If he has made any mistakes he proposes to let the f Senate know how he wasleoTintoJEem and to make those who deceived him bear their share of the responsibility In cases where charges have been filed with him since the appointments remade re-made it is said he will call attention to the fact after sending in their names This fully accounts for the sending to the Senate of the name of Judge Powers Pow-ers despite the showing made against the gentleman If President Cleveland had had beforehim the charges against Powers last April this Territory would never had heard of the gentleman from Kalamazoo but in his ignorance the President made the appointment and now proposes that the Senate and the country shall know that he was im posed upon and by whom The Powers Pow-ers charges are in the hands of the 1 Senators and many of themare backed by the affidavits of good men whose word will not be doubted As none of the accusations refer to the Judges career in Utah the silly accusation that the Mormons at the bottom of the opposition to hinT n ill appear gauzy in i the extreme te tlie men who are to pa sin s-in judgment on his qualihcationsand merits |
