cent par box For sate bj Z 0 H f A Corrupt Alderman NEW YoRK March 18 Alderman Jachne was arrested at the City Hall at noon today and taken at once to the police headquarters charged with I bribery Before the Broadway investigation investi-gation committee last week testimony was introduced showing that silverware silver-ware stolen from Mrs Hamilton was traced to Jachnes shop that Jachhe first tried to bribe one of the detectives sent to recover the property and failing fail-ing in this paid the value of the silver fltOOOto the owner through th lawyer who unsuccessfully defended me thieves The charge does not rest on the testimony of one witness alone but it is supported by that of two or three Jachne was taken into one of the private pri-vate rooms The indictment against Alderman Jachne has been found but not filed said District Attorney Martin Mar-tin this afternoon The charge against him is that he received a bribe in consideration con-sideration for which he voted for the granting of the franchise to build a road in Broadway to the Broadway Surface Railway Co after the resolution had been vetoed by the mayor The warrant war-rant for Jachnus arrest was issued by Judge Gildersleeve of the Court of General Gen-eral Sessions upon affidavits furnished bJ Inspector Byrnes He will be arraigned ar-raigned before Gildersleeve in a few minutes As soon as it became kno = non n-on the street that Jachrib had been arrested ar-rested politicians and aldermen by dozens flocked to the city hall ilr Martin under the direction of Judge Gildersleeve ordered the papers for bail to be drawn fixing the amount of bail at 15000 J ODonnell who keeps a liquor store was accepted as bondsman While the papers were being be-ing drawn Jachne sat smoking a cigar in the private office He did not appear ap-pear to feel very bad over his arrest and seemed to take it as a matter of course He said that he did not want to talk about his arrest to reporters whatever he find to say would be given out by him at the proper time |
