Show The Mississippi Tragedy NEW OELEANS March ISA special from Winona Mississippi to the Times Democrat gives the following particulars of the circumstances leading to the tragedy enacted at Carrollton Miss yesterday Some months ago Robert Moore a young man from Loire Leflore County went to Carrollton There hemet he-met Ed Brown colored with whom he had an altercation and the negro smeared and poured on him molasses which he carried in a jug J M Lid dell Jr of Greenwood a friend 6 f Moores happened to meet Brown and mads some allusions lo his treatment ol Muore Brown gave him impudence and Liddell started at him but was prevented by the bystanders from attacking at-tacking him The negro then went and armed himself and induced others to do likewise They stationed themselves on the street some concealing themselves behind trees and when Liddell came out after supper from the hot lhe saw them and asked what they meant whsreupon Brown responded it was none of his damned business Aft ha Liddell struck at Ed Brown with his fist and Ed and Charles Brown his brother both simultaneously fired upon Lid lell one ball striking the elbow of his right arm About Ibis time some fifteen ortenty shots were fired from i1if rent quarters Liddell pulled his listol and hit Ed Brown in the abdo men and received one shot in the lleshy part tof his len Charles Brown was shot in the shoulder The parties who had taken part wera brought before be-fore the mayor and forthwith reeived an examination and were bailed to appear before the next circuit court Tflreats were continually made by the Brown brothers that they would have Jim LioTdells blood Further they had five double barrelled shot guns loaded even fingers deep and would kill tne firjQmau who put his foot on their ground Ou the 12th instant they made an affidavit again James Liddell and others including some of the best citizens of the place and mea who knew nothing of the difficulty charging them with assaulting with attempt at-tempt to murder in the previous difficulty dif-ficulty Previous to the opening of the trial 5esterday Brown boasted on the street that he had his body guard and would snoot the first man that made a move in his direction The case was called at noon when the court house was immediately filled with negroes who stationed themselves around and about the Brown brothers The attorneys at-torneys were proceeding with the case when there suddenly appeared about a hundred white men all well armed Perceiving their entrance Brown drew his pistol and fired in the direction di-rection of Liddoll who was between his attorneys and thereupon firing became general Ten were instantly in-stantly killed and two others have since died Some escaped by jumping through the windows a distance of at least twenty feet from the ground The room was completely filled with smoke The judges bench is on the north side of the room and the benches facing it are towards the south It is a very large court room with windows aft np n1 g5 n fh nfh = n P > counted 135 shot holes in the wall of the passage leading down stairs ten shot holes and in the bench thirty shot holes One shot struck the north window win-dow sash and glanced into the wall Five other shots show on the north wall from the direction of the benches Large pools of blood were on the floor of the courtroom court-room The mob then left as quickly and quietly as they came in The general gen-eral impression is that it will end in further trouble as heretofore a few of the negroes killed were constantly creating cre-ating a bad feeling and led other negroes peaceably inclined to produce strife between the whites and blacks The good people of Carrollton deprecate depre-cate all this and regret that a few innocent in-nocent colored people were drawn into the fuss The following is a list of the killed Andrew Robertson Charles Brown Ed Brown Joe Lang Jim Harris Har-ris Amos Matthews Scott Moore French Hughes Coley Litle Jim Johnson i Fully as many were wounded One colored man rolled himself out of one of the west windows falling on the brick pavement odtside but got up and made his escape unhurt As he was getting out th Hofs were fired at him two of wtucn struck the windowsill i window-sill and one went through theglass I All is cmietnow The principal leaders of the gang were Charles and Ed Brown who were amongst the killed It is impossible to I get anyone to state the names of any of fho noTonna ir tt o mnK nni SD TCllI HP very difficult to ascertain them as nobody no-body in the excitement tooknotice of I any persons who entered the courthouse court-house No arrests have yet been made |
