Show I > C THE INSANE ASYLmr Closing Scenes of the Opening Day A LETTER FROM DElHirHUBD fits CongratulatiOns and Eegrets A Congratulatory Telegram Jfrota Judge PowersOther Notes After the opening of the Territorial InsaneAsylum on Wednesday afternoon the majority of the visitors returned home although many remained to attend at-tend the ball given in the evening At about 8 oclock the structure was lighted and to one observing it from Centre street the electric lights shining through the many windows appeared as so many glittering stars in the darkness and really presented beautiful beauti-ful sight All the conveyances available were procured by the Board of Directors thus adding greatly to the convenience of the public By 830 the entire building build-ing was crowded there being as many present to participate in the dancing as were present during the day The ball was held on the corridor ef the second flbor and the sport commenced about 9 oclock while some were enjoying the diversion of the dance others were amusing them 8lves in the several large rooms by cardplaying social intercourse etc the main corridor being so thronged that no room was left for an audience Miss Lillie Millner and Miss Nellie Fleinmirvrsang The Nightingale with great feeling and certainly did themselves them-selves credit Jeppersons band discoursed dis-coursed the music for the evening and the whole affair was such an enjoyable one that it will reign in the memories of those in attendance as the grandest pie sure event witnessed in Provo for many years The party dispersed at midnight So general was the satisfaction satisfac-tion expressed at the grand success of the building throughout that the Board of Directors need well feel pleased About half an hour after the conclusion conclu-sion of the afternoon exercises the following fol-lowing telegram was received by the Secretary of the Board CODES July 15th 1885 A OSmootJr 4 I regret that official duties prevent my attending the opening of our asylum I trust if may result in more good than its founders anticipate Signed > 0 W POWERS Mr Smoot kindly allowed us to copy the above and also the following letter from Dr H M Hurd of Pontiac Asylum Michigan which he received just too late to read at the meeting Dr Hurd was very kind and accommodating accommodat-ing to our asylum committee while they were east and iris advice and experience ex-perience assisted them greatly in their purchases The letter explains itself POSIIAC Mich July 10th 1835 A 0 Smoot Jr Esq Secretary Board of Director Territorial Insane Asylum Dear SirYour letter of the 29th of June inviting me to be present at the opening of the Asylum for the Insane for the Ter itory pf Utah is received I regret that it wil T > e impos ible for me to accept the kind invitation which the Board of Trustees has thus extended If I could be present would offer my congratulations tions upon the degree of success which has already bsen attained by those who lad charge of this important enterprise An excellent wellappointed building i has been constructed in a substantial thorough manner upon a plan which permits of its future extension A capable cap-able conscientious and efficient gentleman gentle-man to watch over its interests n Ito direct the treatment of patients has been selected and the asylum enters upona new stage of existence The same praiseworthy desire tcr cteate a good asylum may be relied upon to ensure sure full cooperation and consistent support on the part of your Board I confidently look forward to the great prosperity and usefulness of the Terri tonal Asylum With kind personal regards and best wishes 1 am amYours very truly HENRY M HeaD Med Supt PBOVO CITY Utah |
