Show THE ROBBERS V 2 = t I Exptnation n of n Explanation of How The 3 in Captured I a 1 jfo SUICIDE OF TWO TOUSWOHEh s i A Hatd UII1 AtiitrinrAKHated Dls astroo Fire 1 ho Presidents Condition Yesterday Bow the Robber Were Cnpturreil LEAVKWOETM December 29 It was learned at a late hour last night that Detective Pinkerton came to this city in response to a summons from Mrs Wltrock II Jim Cummings mother who informed him Pinkerton that she bad important information for him When Pinkerton arrived at Mrs Witrocks nouse he was handed an express ex-press packake containing 22 XQ < in currency cur-rency which Witrock had sent to his family after the robbery sending word by the messengers who brought the money that he had won it by gambling and speculating He directed his family to keep the money secreted for him as he had shot a man in Chicago and told them that it would be attached for damages and that he was obliged to leave on account of this shooting The money had not been disturbed and was in the original wrappers Pinkerton will probably remain re-main here during tomorrow It is supposed that Witrock during one of his visits to this city hid large sums of money stolen and that he will now turn it over to the detectives There has already been received of the stolen money about ftSOOO Shortly after midnight the detectives who brought Fred Witrock alias Jim Cummings to this city left Witrocks house with their prisoner and repaired to the hotel Where they took a room and retired While the two officers were absent with Witrock from the house Mrs Witrock was induced by a reporter to tell what she knew of the case as her sons connection with it could not be concealed Between broken sobs she admitted that Fred had participated in the robbery but would be released as he had confessed all to the detectives She said that shortly after the robbery Oscar Cook I came to Leavenworth and risited her one evening and after talking to her for some time said Fred was Jn trouble that he had > AAdo i large sum 01 money 011 Ii w ai deal in Chicago and hd some difficulty with a broker aver the matter which ended by his hooting the latter that he had to flea from the country and wanted his mother to take care of the money until she heard from him farther This she agreed to do and the money was left I In her possession Some time after this another young man who lives ID this city but whose identity ahe refused to I divulge called and left another package of money and that on two other occasions oc-casions two other young men called a different times and left money which they said had come rom Fred When asked If she knew the amounts or sum total she said she did not that they were large packaesa but she had never counted it believing implicitly in Freds story and thinking she was doing him a kindness by caring for his property and not decampUsg I but that he came by it honestly ao1 had no occasion to H53 any of it having money of his Own When asked how the utttctivea happened to be here st tchine her house she said When I read of Freds arrest I immediately wrote to the ciress company telling them of the money and requesting them to come to Leavenworth and that Is undoubtedly why they are here |
