Show A SUCCESSFUL UTAH BOY James Harwood Jr of Lehi a Lucky Art Competitor To the Editor of THE HERALD An agreeable experience wis hal a few days ago by our Lhi artist James Harwood Jr and his friends on receiving word from the Academy of Design ban Franc co that there had been awarded to young Mr Harwood the Academy gold medal whichis the highest pnze gives by it The trophy arrived here per Wells Fargo i Cos express yesterday It is about the size Of a tv old piece i And JM suitably in inscribed scribed with the name of the winner by whom and for what issued and is enclosed in a crimson silk plush case or boxThe The subject of the prize drawing is an ancient statue Creel or Roman called Discabulus representing muscular cular development strength etc andre and-re a naked athlete throwing quoits The prizedrawing is retained by the Academy but a former production on the same subject and by the same artist is on exhibition in his studio which conveys as much information perhaps us possible to the unartmic mind The School of Design had about seventy five students and out of these eight were selected to compete lor the prize A months time was allowed and used for the work The actual time used was six hours per day and five days per week Our artist naturally feels encouraged en-couraged and his friends are elated by his success and all feel1 pleased that one more Utah boy has been able to win something away from home and in competition with talent from other places J W LRIII December 13 1SSC |
