Show THE N Y STRIKE I I I I The Picnic Among the StreetCar Street-Car people J TURF TOPICS IN TILE EAST I 4 The Fnymer ConvetittonOnly TwentyFive K lnlnfoniar Su ar Other > ofe j The Street Car StrlVc NEW YORE August 26TwQ cars started out early on the Broadway line they have a strong police protection and no crowd is tolerated anywhere When car 200 of the Broadway line got down to Fortyfourth Street about 10 oclocK it was attacked by a mob of roughs and strikers and thrown fruits the track A wild scene followed for a few moments The crack of police mens clubs upon the heads of the roughs could be heard above the yells and curses of the mob It took but a few moments ot vigorous work by the police to clear Broadway and send the strikers flying down side streets A number of cars are being run by the Broadway road each car carrying six policemen and the streets are also titled with blue coats The mob is in bad temper but none of the roughs dare do more than shout and hurl stones through the car windows and then seek the shelter cf some alleyway 230 pmPolice Inspector Steers has just telegraphed Police Superintendent Murray that a mob of riotous strikrrs has collected in Upper Broadway and started down town Reserves have been ordered to the scene The threatened mob on Broadway quickly dispersed It is believed unless a settlement is reached by sundown a general tiu uo will be ordered tomorrow to-morrow TUB P1CXIC COXTIXCZ3 This afternoon it was given out that the Broadway car troubles were at an end that the company and strikers had agreed and that the cars would be running run-ning in two hours At midnight there are no eigns of the cars and it is now understood a secret meeting which Is trying to solve the muddle is still in SeSsiOn New YORK August 2dThe strike of the Broadway Street car men is settled and the men will all go back to work on 1 terms that were offered them by President Presi-dent Thompson on Tuesday and which were refused at that time The executive execu-tive board of the Empire Protective Association As-sociation had not favored a tie up from the beginning as a matter of policy and have made persistent efforts to get the men to make some kind o compromise NEW YOBC August 26 In the conference con-ference th s afternoon between the Broadway railroad authorities and the spokesman of strikers the latter received re-ceived a renewal of the proposition to try the new scheduo of six trips per day with a promise that if after a faithful trial of four days the new schedule was not satisfactory the old one would be restored This proposition was considered until afte midnIght by the men and accepted ac-cepted j hey will return to work to rrorrow morning Nonunion men now at work will not be discharged The Belt Line company will submit a proposition tomorrow A demand has been made on the Sixth Avenue road for ie I rrlTtafetncnt of the discharged men and three days given for answer Th Fir ponrt Street line will prosy pro-sy iut M uJ up I |
