Show T be Steamer LD IlEagcotte Disaster CHICAGO October 5DailJ News St Louis special says Shortly aftea noon today the steamer La JlascotU bound from Grand Tower Ills to Cape Gir ardeaurMo exploded her boilers opposite op-posite Neeleys Landing burned to the waters edge and floated nearly a mile below Willards Landing where she lodged on shore The reports of the accident are very meagre and a full list of the killed and wounded cannot be obtained The towboat Eagle was within sight of the La Mascottt when the explosion explo-sion tookplaceand rendered valuable assistance as-sistance rescuing all who were left alive The Eagle took twentyfive persons to Cape Oirardeau No list of passengers could be obtained as the register was lost and the excitement so intense among the survivors and officers that no one could tell who was on board Among the lost are known to be Judge Hager and wife Miss Kneigher daughter of Christ Kneigher Wm H Wheeler and two children and Fritz Laird all of Cape Girardeaa Charles Ansel colored two chambermaids and unknown ladies with two children The bodies of the last three and one of the chambermaids were recovered and taken to Cape Girirdeau on the Eagle J R Perkins first cletk Miss Julia Rabicb of Cape Girardeau and First Eug eer Power supposed to be lot out of a Clew of twentyfourfourteen were save d and the total loss of life is placed a between eighteen and twenty two Those knwn to be badly injured are Lena Buchanan daughter of George Buchanan of Cape Girardeau and Lon Adams first mate Among the saved are Captain J B Thompson Henry Leoneary steward James V Lonohue pilot J J Harlan second clerk and L > C Maptz second engineer La Maxotte was a new boat having been built by Evansville Ind parties during the past summer at a cost of about 33000 and especially designed for packet trade between St Louis and Cape Girardeau The patronage patron-age achieved was more than satisfactory satisfac-tory The steazner was making two weekly trips with heavy loads of passengers pas-sengers and freight Captain Thomson considered her remarkably fast She left St Louis at 4 oclock on Monday afternoon |
