Show SHOWING HIS COLORS The conservative element in souety which has all along felt more or less uneasiness over the rapid growth of the Knights of Labor organization will be pleased rather than alarmed by the tendency of the society towards politics For a long time the Knights professed that their organization had nothing to do with politics that theirs was a purely industrial and social society with the object of mutual benefit and protection of its members against the coercion and abuse of the employing employ-ing class Mr Powderly the Genera Master Workmen hasuntil recently persistently refused to lead the order to the support of any candidate or party and has invariacly declared that the Knights were in no respect political politi-cal or partisan Latterly however it has bean observed that Mr Powderly has manifested an itching for political office and that he has not been so pronounced in his opposition to the order going into politics In New York on Monday evening even-ing the General Master Workman delivered a speech in the interest Henry George for mayor As was appropriate ap-propriate and to beexpected under the circumstances the speech was the harrangue of a demagogue appealed to the baser passion of men and not to their intelligence it was an address framed and uttered especially for the ears of the povertystricken and ignorant ignor-ant and was intended to inspire them with the foolish idea that their poverty was due solely to the laws which were made and executed in the interest of the rich More than anything else that Mr Powderly has done or said this address expressed the true character of the man showing him to be an ambitious demagogue bent on using his influence as head of the great labor organization to help himself and those whose principles are radical and revolutionary like his own The solid con servative people of the country trill be pleased by this showing of colors by Mr Powderly who > > now stands where he belongs and where he can be fought fairly and defeated There can be no successful party in this country which in tinctured with socialism As soon as the Anarchist Anar-chist idea shows itself in politics the law and order loving elements combine to overthrow it Mr Powderly and his workingmen are weaker politically today to-day than they were last year or lat month when their politics was doubtful doubt-ful because they are now understood to be on the side represented by Mr George and the revolutionsts |
