Show T THE PUGILISTS 1 4 Tile Display at the Pavilion Last Night If Some 200 persons gathered at the Pavilion Pa-vilion last night the crowd being somewhat some-what motley and all of the masculine persuasion the object being to have a good time after the manner of menThe men-The sparring contests up to the last one were measurably tame though some ii tie so ence was shown here and there not enough to startle any one but just enough to whet the appetite of the sports for something real in the heavy line The dog fight and cock fight amounted to nothing as the purps were muzzled and the roosters spent more time looking at the audience than in business and when they did clinch they let loose too early to satisfy the boys Some very good club swinging and dumbbell ntting was done but all hands were waiting for the event of the evening which came on about 10 oclock The master of ceremonies announced Mr Smith of California ana Mr Fitzgerald of Salt Lake Thcj < gentlemen immediately im-mediately appeared in ring costume naked to the waist and entered the roped area in the centre of the hall each i accompanied by two sronds all the i paraphernalia for rubbing down invigorating in-vigorating etc being on hand After choosing a timekeeper and referee the later calkd Shake hands when the principals and seconds advanced to the centre and performed that courtesy Then time rang out upon the air and Smith and Fitzgerald Fitz-gerald came up and placed themselves them-selves iu battle array The former is about 5 feet 8 inches in height and weighs 175 pounds the latter two or three inches taller and thirty pounds lighter Eightounce mittens encompassed en-compassed their mawle3rs and without ado they went in for THE FIGHT Round 1Both sparred cautiously for some time each watching eagerly for an opening Fitz finally led but was short Smith trying to return but missing miss-ing A light giveandtake then ensued and more measuring distances followed Smith ducked a sockdoiager and recovered I recov-ered but received a straight lefthander in the dialfo owing up the compliments com-pliments with a ribroaster on Fitz Rapid passages took place followed fol-lowed by a clinch with break from the referee Both men were now flushed and business was the order of the hour Fitz made a terrific rush which was neatly passed and countered and some terrific halfarm work followed fol-lowed the Salt Laker getting it hot on the neck shoulders and once or twice while partially cinchedjOn the backThe round ended decidedly in Smiths favor one of the sports calling out wheres your Fitzgerald now As the men took their seats it was noticed that both had bellows to mend and their seconds fanned and rubbed industriously indus-triously Round 2Both prompt at the call of time and hard work commenced immediately imme-diately Smith led and scored a light facer Fitz soon returning with a sto machacher on the breadbasket Hard slugging followed and two or three breaks had to be called Smith knocked his opponent against the ropes two or three times and got there himself him-self once or twice they were actually fighting and hitting as hard as they could some of the blows sounding like the descent ot a triphammer Suddenly Sud-denly Fitz dodged a blow that might have felled an ox and landed a blow on Smiths neck that sent him to the floor all of a heap and stood there waiting for the ten seconds to expire in which Smith could rise when time was called Round SDidnt take place Fitz came to the scratch when his opponents oppo-nents seconds threw up the sponge in token of defeat Smiths arm was badly injured by contact with the concrete Poor there being a gash from which the blood was flowing copiously Fitzgerald and his partisans who were mainly soldiers like himself shouted hurrah he went over and shook haads with his vanquished opponent oppo-nent and the crowd dispersed It wa the only outandout slugging match we have ever had here and was ostensibly for 250 a sideS side-S U |
