waiting for a quorum the Marshal announced that the required number was present order by I and the meeting was called to Recorder H M Wells In the absence carried of the Mayor it was moved and that Alderman Speirs take the chair After the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting the chairman called for PETITIONS J D A petition was read signed by H McAllister and eight others repre had senting that the previous Council ordered the graveling of Fifth South street that after a delay of two years the south side of that street had been graveled but that the north side had been left in its former boggy condition con-dition They therefore asked that the north side between Second and Third East receive attention as soon as the grading on Sixth South is finished streets Referred to the committee on and alleys A petitionwas read from Louis Oviatt stating that on June 5th 1S84 the council coun-cil leaded him n parcel of limestone land at the rate of 200 per annum ill installments quarterly and payable in that he had already paid100 on account of this lease of late however the lime rock had proved unsatisfactory to the smelters and a further working of it would prove unprofitable to the petitioner peti-tioner He therefore asked that he be released from the contract without further fur-ther payment MR JEKKIKGS moved that the petition be not granted Seconded MR WADDELL moved that it be received re-ceived and referred to the committee on public grounds Carried A petition was read from E D Egan and William Keating protesting against the granting ofVll1 H Shearmans petition pe-tition relative to changing the course of a certain stream Referred to the committee com-mittee on irrigation G D B MILLER head master of St Marks school petitioned for the donation dona-tion of one of the Jos A West maps Referred to the Mayor with discretion to act L f nO FRED BARNES sent in a petition representing repre-senting that he had recently taken out c a license as hotel and saloon keeper but that an execution levied upon his landlord had forced him to discontinue business He therefore asked for a remittance of his license for the unex pired term Referred to the committee Dn licenseR license-R ROGERS an old man poor and a cripple petitioned for a remittance of his license as runner of a job wagon Remitted for one year H BUllRING was granted a license as saloon keeper for three months from October 23d i MISCELLANEOUS The Recorder stated that six months interest on the Wardell note would be drawn for on November 1st 1750 was therefore appropriated to meet the draft One thousand dollars was appropriated appropria-ted to the contingent fund of the Street Supervisor The report of the committee on finance laid on the table at the last meeting recommending the adoption and the of insurance on the City Hall buildings adjacent and = that the BathHouse Bath-House be covered with insurance up to twothirds or threefourths of its value then came up for disposition MR CLARKI move that so much of the report as refers to the Bath House be adopted and that 2000 insurance be placed upon that building MR PYPER I move that so much 6f the report as refers to the City Hall and the surrounding buildings be adopted and that the Bath House be exi laded MESSRS J F WELLS WEBBER STRING FELLOW WADDELL and PYPER made speeches strongly favoring the principle of insurance though most of them were of the opinion that 8000 was a greater sum than was needed on the City Hall and adjacent buildings A member intimated that it might be a blessing to have the Bath House take i lsJi JO4AA 0 S fireA gentleman said sotto voce that there was little danger of that as the landlord was never known to have the building heated A member said he thought there was strong necessity for insuring the contents con-tents of the City Hall notwithstanding the close proximity of the Firemens Hall MR PETTIT I would like to ask the gentleman if he would insure the fire engine After considerable discussion the report re-port ot the committee was amended to read 6000 instead of 8000and the insurance upon the Bath House was placed at 2000 It was moved by Mr Clark that the Mayor distribute the 6000 upon the various buildings and their contents as he saw fit Carried Mr STRING FELLOW I would suggest that the Mayor be instructed as to what companies the insurance should betaken be-taken in A MEMBER Let him take it where he ftn get the best rates ci uuc U > vxui v > The committee on Jordan and Salt Lake City canal reported adversely upon petition of Maria Trimm for alleged damages stated to have been caused by seepage water from the canal as the city was entirely exonerated from payment of further damages by the decree of the Third District Court i A certificate of land title from the Probate Court for a parcel of land two rods wide adjoining the Kimball estate property on the south being two rods of the north side of North Temple street between East Temple and Mrst East streets was read by the Recorder who explained that a portion of the same land had been previously deeded to other parties The Mayor before issuing issu-ing title desired an expression of the Council on the subject Referred to the committee on public grounds associated asso-ciated with the Mayor and City Attorney the MR PETTIT moved that when Council adjourn it be till Wednesday November 5th as next Tuesday would election day No second and the be adjournment was taken until the regular date |
