Show = l i I CLEVELAJST I All Enthusiastic Reception in It 1 New York II i DURING A HBAYY RAINSTORM fpt t A Grand Parade and Hevievr Over I joyed Multitudes Throng Round the Future President Enthusiastic Reception In New York NEW YORK October 28Despite the rain today the Hoffman House was crowded with callers on Governor Cleveland Among them were State Comptroller Chapin Silas M Burt Gen Chaler General Farnsworth Colonel James T Fay John 0 Denlin Dr F Leroy Satterlee Congressman James C Hassett of Pennsylvania Rev G Gottheil rabbi of the Temple Emanuel Rev John G Auketoll chaplain of St Bernards church and Gen D Mercer The first and second division of the National Guard were reviewed this afternoon after-noon by Governor Cleveland from a stand erected at the Worth monument on Madison Square Notwithstanding the rain the troops were ill line promptly the various commands turning turn-ing out with full ranks On the reviewing review-ing stand with the Governor were Generals Gen-erals Christiansen bhaler and Farnsworth Farns-worth and their staffs Major Stone and a number of other well known military men The general appearance of the troops was commended The following regiments paraded 7th 8th 9th 11th 12th 22d Wth 71st and 1st and 2d batteries 1 bat-teries of artillery The Brooklyn organ isations were 3d battery 13th regiment regiment 17th separate company I and the 23d 32d and 42d regiments I Governor Cleveland rose at eight 1 oclock this morning despite the fatigue incident to his reception in Newark last night From nine a m until late in the afternoon he was engaged in receiving re-ceiving visitors Beside W H Barnum and other members of the State and national na-tional committees the callers included Rev Thos J Ducey of St Lees church Senator McPherson of New Jersey Samuel J Randall of Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania Silas W Burt of the State civil service commission and Thomas Wentworth Higginson of Cambridge Mass The Governor leaves on the nine oclock train this evening for Albany At 2 p m it was still uncertain whether the review would occur Cleveland Cleve-land being unwilling to subject the officers of-ficers and men to the discomforts of a public parade in a rainstorm Adjutant General Farnsworth General Shaler and other officers of the National Guard were in consultation with the Governor at the Hoffman House throughout the forenoon and mounted orderlies were in attendance to convey final orders to the various regiments Those of the first division the 22d 11th 9th 12th 7th 8th 09th and 71st with two batteries of artillery were awaiting orders in their armories The second I division comprising the Brooklyn regiments the 13th of which Henry i Ward Beecher is chaplain the 14th 2M 32d and 47th with a battery of i artillery had arrived and were held waiting orders while getting a thorough I wetting The vicinity of the reviewing stand the Worth monument was crowded with spectators with umbrellas hoisted The rain having somewhat moderated definite orders were issued for the review notwithstanding the rain Both sides of the streets through which the procession passed were thickly lined with men and women who stood until all the regiments had passed For an hour before the time appointed ap-pointed for the march of the column the vicinity of the grand stand was packed with people It was ten minutes min-utes past 4 when the Governor in an open barouche drawn by four white horses reached the stand He was accompanied ac-companied by Gen Farnsworth in full uniform The stand was comfortably filled The Governor was surrounded by his staff during the review He stood from 415 until 510 pm without an umbrella in the rain lifting his soaked hat in response to the salutes and again as the colors of the respect ive regiments passed After the column had passed a deafening volley of cheers was given for Governor Cleve land and he returned to the Hoffman House NEW YORK October 28Governor Cleveland and his staff were entertained after the review by MajorGeneral Shaler and staff in the Hoffman House The Governor left the hotel in time to take the train for Albany leaving Grand Central depot at 9 pm 11 |
