Show BOCCACCIO Performed by the Geistinger Opera Company After many delays the Geistinger Opera i Company appeared last night at the Theatre and notwithstanding the steady rain at and before the hour for commencement there was very large attendance The troupe is beyond question the equal of any thing of the kind that has been here and in the matter of the chorus it is certainly the superior In individual cases this inland metropolis has been very fortunate and can boast the appearance of Pareppa Rosa De Murski Lotta Gary Kellog and others but has never had a finer chorus Mrs Geistinger gives unmistakable un-mistakable evidence of being a superior su-perior actress of great power and remarkable versatility She is also a very fine vocalist but in this par ticuiar is outstripped by Mrs Ita berg of her own company The latter lady luia frequently been compared with Cary aid from the performance last nig lit many thought the eompaiison not unwarranted un-warranted She is a large beautifully formed woman with an attractive face and a voice of unusual power ana sweetness over which she has complete com-plete mastery The lady was a favorite from the first It is indeed rare that one beholds at the same time on the stage two such perfect specimens of womanhood as Miss Geistinger Mrs Raberg and it is not surprising that in the third act a masterly duet which had been introduced intro-duced and which was sung divinely I in Italian should win a double en core and then leave the enthusiastic audience unsatisfied The rich voices of the ladies could not hare been heard to better advantage and the expression and actions ac-tions all combined to make it far the most prominent feature of the entertainment The ladies of the troupe all sing well and the gentlemen also are especially good but there were no particularly striking strik-ing voices among them Another pleasing aud noticeable event of the performance was the perfect ease and grace with which each artist rendered his part There was not I even the shadow of a hitch either in businessdialogue or the singing and as before stated the choruses were so fine that many regretted re-gretted there were not more of them The costumes were not only superb but were historically I correct and showed vividly the character of the nabiliments with which the Florentines of the Four teenth century were accustomed to adorn themselves Notwithstanding the fact that the opera was sung in German the comedians made a vast amount of amusementand laughter was very frequent and decidedly hearty The applause was most liberal all through the evening and there were several encoresthe Coopers song as on a former rendition rendi-tion of Boccacciotaking immensely im-mensely with the audience The whole performance was a signal sig-nal success and Warrantsthe prediction pre-diction that there will t > e very large attendance tonight again It is said that Helena in Offenbachs La Belle Helena to be given this evening is one of Miss Geistingers finest characters The general regret re-gret last evening was tbatr the troupe could not remain for the three nights and that it could not give a matinee It was also a matter mat-ter of common regret that this lady of wonderful versatility could not be seen in a purely dramatic character charac-ter that the full scope of her power might the better be appreciated |
