Show i7A TALK ABOUT UTAH 10 ti t I I T 1The The Mormons Not so Black as They Have Been Painted Mining Matters Looking Up re JI G Howard of Utah Territory a cousin of General D E Cornell of the Kansas Pacific road is in the city and was interviewed by an Evening Star reporter this morning who asked How are things in Utah Well everything is qaiet he replied re-plied Of course the Edmunds bill is the most exciting topic there just now The Mormons are anxious to see who the commissioners will be that the President is to appoint It looks now as though they would be eastern men but the Mormons claim that they do not care for that if they are honest They claim that theLAW LAW IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL but that they are loyal people and will abide by it I attended conference confer-ence at tabernacle the other day as I came through and heard Brigham Young jr preach His sermon was very rational in all its points and while he spoke of the law as unconstitutional reminded his people that it was enacted by the government which they as citizens cit-izens of the country are bound to support He threw out a suggestion however that Gods law is more binding than mans I do not think there is any danger of trouble from the Mormons The Eastern people have very peculiar ideas of the Mormons I know when I first went to Utah I expected to see all Mormons Mor-mons wearing a perfect arsenal of weapons and supposed they were a bloodthirsty murderous set This is a great mistake I am not by any means a Mormon but I could travel from one end of the territory to another an-other WITHOUT A PISTOL OK A DOLLAR So could any stranger They are the most hospitable people in the world and have been very badly misrepresented by sensational writers writ-ers This play of The Danites is a sample of what I refer to Only about 10 par cent of the Mormons are polygamists and out of the 120000 of them in the territory over 41000 are children not more than 8 years old They held their conference in the tabernacle the other day when the congregation numbered 14000 people How are the mining interests in Utah They are prosperiug Every hill in the country contains mineral and the country is far ahead of Colorado Col-orado but at present eastern capitalists capit-alists are afraid to invest there because be-cause of the Mormon scare I think as soon as they understand the Mormon people a little better Utah mining stock will be in great demand de-mand Mr Howard leaves for the east tonight Kansas City Evening I Star 10 |
