Show MONTE CBISTO The Dramatization of Dumas Masterpiece as Rendered Last Evening It was audience a goodsized considering con-sidering the heavy attractions which have recently reigned at the Theatre that assembled last night to witness the first performance by the GrismerDavies company There was an interest evident on every hand that showed how thoroughly the audience was acquainted with the great mast rpicce jn fiction from which the play had been derived If we were to indulge in close and cold criticism of earh member of the GrismerDavies company there would be some who would undoubtedly come in for unfavorable mention but we feel that in the face of the forcible and polished efforts of Mr Grismer at least to say nothing of the support afforded several of nis by leading members any notice of the faults of inferiors would be hypercritical Mr Grismer is au actor very reminiscent of Barrett in face manner and actions He played so long as leading support to that tragedian that he has partaken very greatly of his style and in the costume of the Abbe Busoni last evening eve-ning the remark was general that he forcibly recalled some parts of Barretts Richelieu We can gain no real idea of Miss Davies powers as she was seen in a male character last evening It is evident evi-dent however that she is an artist of real ability and the fire and earnestness t which she imparted to Young Albert promise well for her delineations in Chispa and Stfogoff The border of Mr Webster not Mr Wright as the bills had it was a clever performance and his several disguises were almost startling in their ingenuity Mr Stock well showed the linihe comedian in all that he did and Mica Mabel Bert J gave a very pleasing interpretation of the heroine Mercedes The remainder of the cast was from fair to indifferent Mr Brady was bad in the first act but improved when he progressed in years Mr Wise was weighted with two parts the illness of Mr Wright having made several alterations in the cast and though lIe did parts of both fairly his make up for Villefort did not suggest I the character It was a mistake to give the lame gentleman who plays the soldier sol-dier so much to do The galleries came uncomfortably near to taking him in hand But as we have said the imperfections imper-fections formed but n small part of the I whole and Mr Grismers acting carried the piece to success All who have not seen his fine delineation will have one more opportunity of doing so Monte Cristo having been determined on as the bill for tomorrows matinee Tonight will be given Chispa in whic Miss Davies has won her princi pal reputation The play is of the border bor-der type miners Indians bowie knives and prairie flowers ad libitum ml I5J1el itUU tfU p |
