Show I i FTER THE BATTLE Yiews of the Situation Eastward East-ward Seen AS THE SMOKE CLEARS AWAY What Butler Says Balderdnsli to Blaine A Republican on Kelly The following excerpts from all quarters quart-ers will be read with interest in Salt Lake as showing something more of feeling and rumors during the recent excitement than we obtained over the wires A TalkWith Butler I The following interview with the traitor Butler who it will be remembered remem-bered placed his vote at two million will be interesting reading at this stage it is taken from the Washington Star He says It is almost impossible for any set of men to foot up 1200000 votes seperatelj as cast in different jrecints without making mistakes I feel quite certain that errors will be discovered They may be in Clevelands favor or they may elect Blame Why look at Massacnusetts Tne day after the election elec-tion it was given out that Blames plurality plu-rality was 10000 when in fact it was 23000 Why the night before last In New York an old staff officer of mine came to me saying he had eard of a dispatch going over the wires from the Windsor Hotel signed B F Jones and advising Blaine that Cleveland had been elected My old army friend was badly frightened until I told him that Jones was not at the Windsor Hotel I am I un old soldier and I never get scared at camp rumors General was there ever a Presidential Presi-dential election in this country before that depended upon so close a vote f No sir never In 1856 Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania was the pivotal State and Fremont Fre-mont was elected but a Democratic Re turnng Board discovered that he did not have as many votes as there were cast for him and he was defeated You remember that in 1876 the election was given up for two weeks but the Republicans Repub-licans Returning boards ascertained that the vote was different from that cast General did your vote reach your expectation My vote was larger than I expected You see my vote was not counted except ex-cept in Michigan It was not cast for me My vote was a protection vote and an Irish vote and when it was apparent appar-ent that there was danger of Clevelands election these men determined to vote directly for Blaine A vote for me was only half a vote against Cleveland They saw that and cast their vote for Blaine hence I say my vote except in Michiganwas not counted At Blaines Home The fcllowing is from a recent special I dispatch sent from Blaines home in Maine Blaine for the last three days has been flooded with telegrams from all parts of the North and West expressing the fullest belief that he is elected and assuring him that his friend and supporters sup-porters will stand by him to the last in the assertion and maintenance ef his rights as they may be established bylaw by-law Many the Western dispatches express the hottest indignation at the declaration of the Albany Argus that the men who attempt to Install Blaine in the Presidency will be killed and that the legal consequence of the killing will be taken care of afterwards This is fioni the paper published by Manning nd Hs meaning is understood to hp tea Clevelands pardon would be read 2 ior such onenses This is the way it is interpreted in-terpreted by one of Blames telegrams from Chicago Mr Blai e has also received many distinct and significant telegrams from the South from men who were Confederate Confed-erate soldiers expressing the greatest ear that disorder mav become chronic ia the South if the Democrats are incrusted in-crusted with the national Administration Administra-tion The negroes are in a fright throughout the south at the bare pros Tect These telegrams say that race trouble on a a e scale are feared by many of t1 e b avest men in the South One telegram from Virginia says h Were We-re appalled at the consequences which might follow from the sense of insecurity insecu-rity and consequent panic on the part of the negroes A smaller class of telegrams are the most curious of all They come from men who express regret re-gret that they voted against Blaine One man in New York says he woke up to the reality when he saw the class of men who immediatelv flocked to the front at the prospect of possible Democratic Demo-cratic victory Another from Massachusetts Massa-chusetts says he believed a large number num-ber of socalled independents would reverse re-verse their votes if they could have an opportunity The total number of telegrams is astonishing and indicates the extraordinary interest taken in the situation in New York Many express the belief that Chairman Barnums proclamation is practically a confession of defeat and was a loud boast merely to keep up the courage of those who by unlawful methods are determined if possible to accomplish a false count and fraudulent victory at Albany Was Kelly Tricked The following appears in a New York letter aLight Light on the quandary in this city over the vote for Blaine and Cleveland is furnished by a Republican of national T note and a near friend of Mr Blaine This gentleman says If the final canvass fails to show that Mr Blaine has a majority the real excitement of the campaign will begin for as sure as I stand here John K lly was sold out by a trick and his friends are not done with him I suppose there was some arrangement by which Kelly intended to punish Cleveland and elect his candidate for Mayor Grant At theilast minute some of Clevelands managers came down from Albany and proposed a deal which Kelly accepted He agreed to vote Tammany for Cleveland I Cleve-land if Irving Hall would throw Grace overboard and vote for Grant That started the rumor last Monday night that Grace had withdrawn Tammany i votes early as well as often and hy I noon on Tuesday had been honest I I enough with the County Democracy to be at their mercy Irving Hall had wheeled around and after voting lightly fsll tite morning poured in its vote for Grace Thus the two factions voted for celand < while the Republi I i t i cans knowing they had been sold oat by Kelly stood by Gibbs sufficiently to i 1 secureGrace a plurality John Kelly r t I was neatly trapped but let me tell you i he is not the man to do things by I halves or to be caught without a re treating base There were as many as I i 10000 fraudulent votes cast by Tam i and the Count I many County Democracy and Kelly can turn Stated evidence il he is 1 so disposed and knock Mr Cleveland completely out 4 Il |
