Probably you thought I had forgotten for-gotten you and concluded to never I hear from me again but I thought that you and many of your readers would obtain from the returning excursionists sufficient news to give your correspondent a short rest I Those who visited California with the RiggsSnell excursion last month took in all that was of interest in-terest and have by this time forgotten forgot-ten a good part of what they saw Lheres one thing certain they had propitious weather for moving about in and the majority of them well piloted by Messrs Riggs and George Romney who were indefatigable fatigable in their labors as guides The last named was a particular rusher and let no grass grow under his feet nor under the feet of those he had in tow so eager and earnest was he in fulfilling his occupation Those who tagged him around for a day were glad to get to room suchand suchanumber at the Russ House at the witching hour and satisfied with what they had seen These excursions for those who have the wherewith io do them are fine institutions and if the last one is an example are very successful The theatres gardens public buildings build-ings cemeteries parks Knob Hill beaches drives business thoroughfares thorough-fares Chinatown shipping whar fage hubbub recreation grounds schools churches libraries museums muse-ums hotels the large sugarrefinery of Spreckels Co and numerous imposing buildings afford interest and attraction to the visitors for many days right here in San Francisco Fran-cisco while the ferry boats and railroads are convenient to carry them to the adjacent points of note such as the San Quentin prison the navy yard the fortifications the Berkeley college the Cliff House the beautiful and enchanting scenery at all points across the bay the seaside resorts the palatial summer sum-mer residences of the millionaires which art scattered promiscuously over the central portion of the > ute the oceanthe broad Pacific Hid ever green hills which rise like rdant bulwarks up from the coast re all inducements to the sight rs which are gratifyingpleasure e and impressive But to see all > ts money and those who intend tv liliag the future opportunities forded by these excursions should i aar this fact in mind EEATHENS Already California is overdone in t 11 < matter of Chinese but the cry IM 1 still they come Last week ov T 600 were landed here and last Sunday nearly as many more were brought in The last lot created quite a sensation on board the vessel they eame in by endeavoring to elude the health officers and escape vaccination At one time it was feared a row would ensue as a result of their resisting the operation opera-tion which was ordered performed by the board of health The heathens hea-thens were herded tween decks the hatches put on and one by one they were brought up to the doctor who w th lancet and virus got in his work on the 577 of them in about s ven hours and a quarter They are invading every branch of industry indus-try except printing I beleive and at wages next to nothing are elbowing elbow-ing out the white men Caucasians if they desire to maintain a foot held here will have to chop off living liv-ing as their forefathers lived and chuck rice into their stomachs to sustain the inner man or work all day for twobits or so and in the evening go down to the wharves and catch a few rats for their next days fare This invasion of the country by the pennyhued heathens is going to make this country a good one for laboring men to get away from but the bosses these fellows who make their money from the sweat of their fellowmens brows dont care so long as they make their big percentages per-centages The people should be heard by Congress on this subject and the influential lobbyists who buy legislation should have no hearing Those who suffer are tle ones who should be aided But Im afraid that too much money will be used to kill the efforts being made to stop the wholesale immigration of Chinese THE SUNDAY LAW A feeble fight is going on just now between a few zealous religionists religion-ists and goasyouplease people here and hereabouts and the g a y Pp appear to be ahead so far The old Sunday law which forbids unnecessary un-necessary labor is being tested in divers ways Pleasuregarden people and toted before are being subpoenaed fore the judges of the police court to explain why it is necessary that hev sHould keep their places open to the public on Sundav saloonkeepers saloon-keepers are arrested and dittoedand I 1t they have beaten the law every s t time It is only a matter of a short 4j duration and the ripple on the wave of public excitement caused by these arrests and farces of trials will be numbared with the deadis t sues The great public here appear to rule the roost and lawsConsti tntional or otherwiseare simply laws and thats all i THE VETERANS HOME 4 An object worthy of support is the VeteransHome It is intended to erect in this state a home on a I grand scale where those who have fought bled and died rr for their country can pass the shady side of their lifes in comfort The crippled maimed indigent and infirm old soldiers who have rendered service to America on the battle field and on board the monitors will be provided l = pro-vided in this projected home with l t shelter comfort and aid during the 1 remainder of their sojourn among men Already a vast amount of money has been subscribed and the fund is immense I am not informed i in-formed as to whether veterans in the neighboring states and territories territo-ries will be admitted but if they i 4 may be what a splendid opening t i a will be offered for some o f the ex 1i generals and excolonels you have i t around your city F THE HUE AND CRY This community has taken up the hue and the c cry against Mormons Mor-mons but as a whole it cares precious pre-cious little what is done with them Che newspapers but notably the i i Chronicle aro running a good deal just now on capital Ms in treating ° the Mormons and Mormonism li to doses of spleen and venom I said notably the Chronicle That journal is using the Mormon ° problem to a great extent to give Sargent a blow or two and it is missing mis-sing no opportunity Aaron and not th Mormons is affected by its i onslaught It doesnt want Sargent in the interior department and 05 k t Sargent was at one time friendly to the Mormoas the Chronicle thinks that to publish the fact will help in damning him The policy of the Chronicle is policy but the statements x state-ments assertions and vaporings of i i Y some of some of the other papers i here do not amount to the value of il a louses lug They simply say I ir r what they hearnot what they t think of the Mormon problem They < < reach out as well as they can and 1 3 fumble froth and foam over something some-thing they know nothing about r Their local reporters could be employed t em-ployed in writing up Morton street z Dupont street Chinatown Waverly Place and hundreds of other LI places in this cosmopolitan J cosmopoli-tan city to much better j f advantage than their news editors ii do the hearsays concerning the l homes of men and women in Utah Hit The yarns and lies one hears on the d side here are wonderful and when i traced to their sources are found to 1 emanate from some disappointed 1 tricksters some soulless liars or t 1 some mealymouthed apostates AMUSEMENTS i San Francisco well blessed with r 1 amusements and nobody need die F f f 6 for something new in that line For the last three weeks weve
