tbess wonderful tales reached the ears of the Globe Democrat Demo-crat correspondent who immediately appointed himself a committee cf one on investigation After visiting and questioning several citizens of the city regarding the matter without result the reporler luckily encountered encoun-tered a prominent and wealthy gentleman gen-tleman who wan plied with intero gations which were answered as follower follawy Yea I know something about the Willin on house and if you will agree not to Btsiis your authority 1 will relate the circumstances of the story fJ 1t4 I j Alter the reporter promised notto reveal the gentienanu name the story was continued My father before hId deatntold ine too history of a lady who once rsbided in that ncatjp it is a dark and iHrtrfoljaie The lady was the wife of VA DIESIP TED 1rAK n who wa3 well kuowu In the city twenty years ago fur the agDlficenc6 of his aailylile He itVeI1 a very Ja Lie and miuy were int nigLta when i the wife was alone with the Servants in the gloomy houee wbile her bud band was engrotstd in debasing pleasures with DODD companions in the low groceries and resorts of fast men about town The lady was of eweel dissipation seemed 10 swsiiow all inougbts of wife home and friend One night the gentlaman left the house promising to return at midnight mid-night About 1030 oclock that fatal evening a jtearfal snow otorm arose and covered the world with its fleecy mantle The find piled the snow into great drift so that when morning broke it was hours before the streets were paseable During then the-n gnt of the storm the lady waited with anxious heart for the coming 01 her husband Time and time again did she go to the door and vaiuiy peer into the night hoping for a sight ol toe absent When the gray dawn appeared the lady was utmost distracted dis-tracted and the servants were soon dispatched to see if they could find trace of 1 the missing husband Upon tho walk near his residence halt buried in a snowdrift Was fo nd the body of tue husband Probably the gentleman was stupefied by wine and tell at the threshold hi ol his home in a stupor which ended in death Back to the house was carried the body of 13 dead owner Upon the threshold the wife stood and as the soft snow muffled tramp of men reached her ears she darted into the street One look was eufficeut and the lady fell by the side of her dead husband in a faint Dead and alive were carried into the bouee A few days after the husband was buried but the wife lay in an upper chamber raving in the msd delirium of brain fever which the physician Kinred would end in death 0 retut l aueotio b wever brought convaicbctnor tlU the lady was a maniac Ear1j cvciy morning passers by the ma HOD could see a white face fctaring out ot an upper window while a harsh idigiic laugh sounded from open windows It was THE LADY TTATCHIXG for the face ofjher buo and which nevermore would gbe seen in this world She was always supposed to be perfectly harmless and so was allowed absolute liberty One day she was missed A long and anxious search followed which was rewarded by finding the lady hanging by a rope which was attached to a heavy frame in an unused closet located in the back part of Loa house Crazed by her husbands death she had sought a reunion by means of a suicides death The matter was hashed up by the family of the unfortanate I person and but few peope were cog nizant of the tad history My father stated to me that he could net vouch for the truth of the statement but that he was among the few who had beard the story and which he related to ma before his death II But it is claimed that the house haunted queried the reporter Exactly BO replied the gentleman gentle-man and ° tnereby bangs a tale which is folly as interesting as tbe preceding story As I have already told you sn much I may as well tell the rest It is claimed by those who believe in the supernatural that the house where the romance of a fast lie ended so terribly is nightly haunted by the ghost of the dead woman who committed suicide in yonder closet in the days long passed which can only live again in memory It is customary for people rrsiding in the vicinity of the haunted house to jointly employ a nightwatchman who guard our property from the inroads in-roads of those who would wish to gain a few dollars by robbery One day he resigned without giving a reason As he was a faithful man and received a good salary it seemed I Btiaoge for him to adopt such a course One night I met him in the street and I he mysteriously called me aside and said Spirit to speak with you sir Considerably puzzlrd I followed the I man who related with many signs of fear and agitation a story which to say the leant wag of the strangest t character One night said bp 1 heard a dog bark near the old Wilk nEOn House As it was my duty to investigate any untoward noise Immediately I-mmediately started fir the old homestead home-stead While on my way the dog barked again and in a second my blood seemed to congeal within my body You may not have noticed sir but when there is anything uncanny un-canny in the air a dog has a peculiar bark The animal commences in a deep bowl which runs up the gamut in a eecoud ending with A LCW LONG MOAN In Ireland we call such a bark the gbstwarning I drew my revolver i Rod started toward the Wilkinson i louse As I entered the gate I heard the clOCk in the Catholic Cathedral Church spire strike I think it was striking the hour of midnight Sud denly the door of the house swung pen and I beard ajtootfall I stepped step-ped back into the shade when I beard a low unearthly laugh A second later a white robed form passEd within a few feet of me There was the rustling like the wings of a thousand birds as the figure ran rapidly toward the gate I was stupefied with horror and could not sti to save my life The form suddenly halted and with a quick motion threw up its arms and I heard a shriek and saw the figure fall A moment later it ran back and stopped directly in front of me Toe figure was that of a woman apparently a little over five feet in height The face was ghastly pale and toe eyes shone with the lurid light of insanity I attempted to cry out but my tongue refused to act I guess 1 fainted for I remember nothing until I found myself lying on the grass with the moon shining upon I my face The figure bad disappeared but the next morning I resigned my place No earthly power could make me spend another night near the haunted WilkinsonEL ouee After little conversation said the gentleman I lelt the ex watchman and on my way home pondered over the story I resolved finally to investigate the matter myself my-self A friend and I spent the night in the house and I shall never forget our experience Suffice it to say our experience was substantially the ame as that of the watchman i was thinking of the occurrence a day or two alter I spent toe night there and I remembered the history of the house as related by my father I was forced to the opinion that the wraith or that woman who committed suicide in that be use nightly keeps solitary vigil over the ecene of the tragedy of years ago I am not a believer in ghosts but if the visitant which has been eeenbv three wit nesses can be explained by any one I anxiously wait the solution of the mystery Do not give my came io case you refer to the matter I advise ad-vise you to visit the house yourself and perhaps you can meet the strange apparition Good night II The reporter cogitated the story for sOme time and finally concluded S TO SPEND A NIGHT in the house and so in pursuance of the idea shortly before 12 oclock on a recent night wnen the snow just covered the ground the reportorial ghs teeker arrived upon the scene fully armed and equipped for an encounter en-counter with the visitor from the shadowy world After looking through the window into the gloomy interior of the deserted mansion an iron lever waa inserted underneatL the windowsash and a moment later the reporter etcod upon the floor of a room in the east side of the building After carefully closing the window blinds a light was secured by means of a dark lantern The fitful ray of light danced around the rcom reveal ing square apartment with here and there piles of rubbish which clearly indicated that years had parsed since human beings had the temerity to occupy the dwelling place Every nook and of the cranny building was explored but nothing was seen that in any way could be construed as the lady of the tragedy Determined to fully investigate the matter the scribe seated himself upon a pile of debris and after lighting a cigarette calmly awaited developments Time passed rapidly and nothing was heard except ex-cept the ransacking of rata and the distsnt rapping of a night watch t mans club aa be signaled to listening ears that all waa well The reporter must have fallen asleep as for the space of many minutes oblivion rested upon the scene Through the misty depths of sleep was heard a low sobbing sob-bing laugh In a moment the reporter re-porter was wide awake Again came the sound followed by a low moan and with a resounding clang a wide open door shut Then came the wildest wild-est most inhuman cry that ever rang upon the frighted ear of man It stirred the slumbering echoes and pealed out into the quiet night while above all was beard the distant boom of the City Hall clock proclaiming the hour of 1 Frozen with fear the reporter etood with the dark lantern clutched in his icy hand while again and again nearer and nearer came the bloodcurdling laugh and by the pale gleam of the lantern stood revealed re-vealed a Bbadowy clad form with white saving arms surrounded by A PALE NEBULOUS LIGHT which cast an unhallowed glare throughout the room The figure was that of a woman and the description descrip-tion was exactly like that of the substance sub-stance seen by former vsitora to the haunted spot The face of the woman was pretty but the eyes had a hollow stare and the lips were moving in apparent agony Step by step the figure receded until with a laugh it disappeared F r a second the reporter re-porter stood ape Ibound and then dashed after the presence Every inch of the ruined house was explored ex-plored but nothing was found But the memory of the eight is one that can never be eflaeii Was it a chest or was it not The narrow border ot life and death may have been pasied by this intangible form whose laugh was like a wail of pain It seems as if there must be some way of finding out what this figure is which has been puzzling the brains of so many people Correspondence of the Globe Democrat |
