Show BEVEEES STATUE I J Description of tIle Proposed j Work THE YOUNG BOSTON ARTIST The Work assigned Mr Dnllin I to Twentylive Thousand Thou-sand Dollars The statue which will commemorate the famous Boston hero of the Revolution Revolu-tion Paul Revere is to be made by C E Dallin a young artist of this city Yesterday the committee appointed two years ago chose his model as the one eminently fitted for the honor of celebrating in bronze the well known story of that morning ride In 1882 this committee issued circulars to rusts requesting their cornpetion for a statue of Paul Revere and leaving to their will the choice of a design Ten models were offered all of these with one exception being equestrian statues the exception represented Paul Revere landing alone with no festive embellishment em-bellishment One of tue remaining models represented him standing upon the ground just on the point of mounting mount-ing a very fiery steed The committee selected the three best models and gave to their designers the premium of 300 each but it was felt that no one of these three was exactly what they wanted So negotiations were begun i with various artists and continued for over a rear Different models were presented and considered An effort was made to have the commission given to some artist without asking for a model but this was refused Tuesday I the committee nearly unanimously r adopted the second model of C E Dallin his first model having been among the three which received premiums 1 pre-miums The committee took the precaution pre-caution to call in different geatlemen tor view the model and they also procured the opinion of the best artists All of these were favorable to Mr Dallins model and the letters written by some of the most eminent artists exoreesec the warmest praise and congratulation i to the young artist I The statue isto be of bronze double I I life size mounted on a granite pedestal I similar in theMe respects to the Washington Wash-ington statue upon the Public Garden It represents Paul Revere stopping for moment in his swift course through tho towns to warn the people in the streets or at the doorway of the approaching ap-proaching danger The spirited horse stands with uplifted foot and with curved neck tightly bowed to the breast picturing perfectly the impatience of a steed fired with an excited course over the roads and then suddentlv drawn to a standstill Upon his back sits Paul Revere clothed in the long high cut semimilitary of those days and with the Continental three cornered soft felt hat upon his head His left hand holds firmly the restraining reins while his right is extended backward in easy gesture to illustrate the subject of which hers talking the approach of the British from behind One of tho chief beauties of the representation lies i in the serious earnest expression of the face drawn with tense lines which express fully the anxiety of the messenger I messen-ger No attempt has been made to render the gestures a counterpart of Paul Roverea except incidental shape of head and other minor points the statue is not simply a statue of Paul Severe but a representation of the scene of which that character happens to be the happy incident it is really an ideal memorial of the great national struggle A casting of the model will be made today and next week it will be put on public exhibition The final bronze statue it is expected will stand upon Copley square the committee have petitioned tbo City Government for that location C E Dallin the artist whose model has been chosen over all others is a young man apparently not over 22 years of ago He resides now in Boston though last summer was spent in Utah He studied under T H Bartlett of Boston Bos-ton and sfterWards under S H Morse F of Quincy and only linibhed his lessons two years ago This is his first great work and the success of the young artist is therefore the more commendable The model which he first submitted to the committee was somewhat similar in design to the accepted model the first one however had the horses head drawn far up in the air by the tightened reins in a less graceful position than the present while the riders outstretched out-stretched arm was extended straight from tho shoulder instead of in the I I present natural gesture The young E artist has his studio at the corner of I Tremont and West Street The committee now desire toreceive 1 subscriptions for the statue Enough was originally raised to pay the premiums pre-miums but none remain on hand Tho statue will cost 25000 The city of Boston Bos-ton has subscribed 5000 to be paid on the completion of the monument leaving leav-ing 20000 to be raised by private subscription sub-scription Early gifts are hoped for so that the work may begin at once and be carried rapidly on Two subcommittees subcommit-tees have been chosen a committee tr issue u circular to the people consisting I of Mayor Martin and exMayor Lincoln and a Committee on Finance consisting i of Edwin Wright Charles W Slack Charles Y Whitten Solomon B Steb bins Nathen Appleton and D Webster King Contribution may be sent to any member of these two committees Bo ton
