Show Worthington Confirmed Washington 15Senators Hoar and Dawes came sadly to grief in the Senate today They have been working like beavers for months past to defeat the nomination of Rolland Worthington to be collector of the port of Boston It was the first fight regularly in the Senate against the administration and while everybody knew it would be fruitless thtre was some curiosity to know how many men could be ranged in line against the President Presi-dent The results in executive session ses-sion today when Worthington was confirmed by a vote of thirty eight to fiftyfour shows that seven I republican senatorsHoar Dawes I Hawley Platt Miller New York Sherman and Miller could be hounded on to oppose an objectionable objection-able nomination The fight of the Massachusetts senators has been a most ludicrous one They pretended pre-tended not to oppose it on the I grounds of senatorial courtesy but I because of the stain Worthingtons appointment would be upon the I I civil servic reform principles of managing the Boston custom house Hoar and Dawes spoke in this strain today and alluded to the partisan administration of the office by Simons Beards predecessor Rollins of New Hampshire showed that under Simons the customhouse custom-house had been more efficiently managed and at less cost than under Beard and that more merchants petitioned for the retention of Simons I Si-mons than had petitioned for Beard The democrats who voted against Worthington today were Bayard Saulsbury Williams Vest Pendle ton George and Jones of Florida |
