Show TELEGRAPHIC S 1 FIRE Bil Blaze is Richmond Other Barns Richmond Va 26About noon today to-day the south end of the Richmond and Pitts burg railroad bridge was discovered on fire and when the firemen arrived the whole structure was ablaze and soon tumbled into the river When the flames reached tho Richmond end of the bridge they seized upon the large four story brick tobacco factory of T M Rutherford Co which was quickly destroyed de-stroyed The fire spreading with frightful fright-ful rapidity laid in ashes the large brick tobacco factories of E A Patterson Co and T C Williams Co three tobacco stemmeries of J A Hutchinson two stemmeries of C R and F D Barksdale the stemmery of Abrorn Edwards the Vulcan Iron Works operated op-erated by Bruce Archer twenty tenements tene-ments occupied by poor peopleabout 300 feet of trestle connecting Tredegar IronWorks Iron-Works with the Richmond Pittsburg Railroad ten new freight cars of the Tredegar Company T P Smiths gristmill grist-mill and a number of minor buildings and a quantity of coal and lumber At the southern or Manchester end of the ridge the fire destroyed the Virginia Mining and Manufacturing Companys kaoline works The total loss is estimated esti-mated at 500000 about half of which is covered by insurance The rapid spread of the fire was owing to a heavy gale One life was lost and there were several minor casualties Cleveland 26 Strong Cobbs wholeaalesale drug and paint house wail damaged by fire this afternoon to the extent of 6000 well insured West Ansoma 27 Nichols boarding louse lumber burned Mrs Nichols was dangerously hurt by jumping from a window Two young clerks boarders were burned to death fargo Dakota 26A fire was discov ered in the northeast corner of Chapin Block about 11 At midnight the fire was apparently under control but the wind was fresh from the north The building was occupied by Raymond Kingman wholesale grocers Luger Brothels furniture Ohapin Hall and Masonic Hall |
