Show The Old Treaty Panama 17A resolution has been i submitted to Columbia Congress calling I upon the executive to give a years notice to the United States of the intention of the government of Columbia to withdraw from the stipulation and obligations of the treaty of Deeember 12 1846 between the two countries It also authorizes the executive to enter into new treaties with the United States and Spanish American republics of the continent with the view of coneiliating if possible all legitimate interests concerned in the free transit of the Isthmus of Panama and more particularly par-ticularly with regard to the interoceanic canal enterprise Article 35 of the treaty of 1846 ia particularly condemned as vague and not easy of interpretation and likely to bring about discord between the contracting parties The resolution is supposed to pave the way for joint guarantied guar-antied neutrality between the republics of the new and commercial nations of the old world in behalf of the anal |
