Show The Tariff Bill Washington 13 Kelly chairmen chair-men of the ways and means has privately suggested to several members mem-bers of his committee thepropriety of taking up say five or six schedules sched-ules embraced in the tariff commission com-mission bill such as metals woolen goods cotton goods sugar and chemicals complete thee schedules sched-ules and report them to the House and while the representatives are at work on these subjects the committee com-mittee ran employ its spare time in arranging other chedules Thus it by chance there should not be sufficient time in the present pres-ent session to make a full revision of the tariff action would at least be taken on the schedules of most interest to the general public It is not yet known when the chairman chair-man will make this suggestion as a formal decision of a the committee com-mittee or not A final adjust ment of the bill by members of the ways and means committee has convinced these gentlemen th tit t-it is by no means the perfect measure meas-ure that it was at first supposed But little fault is found with tho general principles underlying the i bill as recommended but a careful examination of the uifteient clauses by experts and congressmen familiar fam-iliar with tariff legislation shows the necessity of a most careful revision re-vision of the commissioners bill A republican member of the Senate finance committee said today that in the chemical schedule the same I article found two different places with different rates of duty affixed In the schedule of WOOlen goods the anator sad several changes are required t > make all tho hems consistent con-sistent with the principle underlying underly-ing the whole schedule Man clauses of the bill are said to be suacfcutible of double construction and same of the phrases used are of uncertain meaning |
