Show 13ELEGRAPHIO The Sosar Interest Washington 13Sugar refiners are trying to counteract the evident tendency to terminate the reciprocity treaty with Hawaii Chairman Williams of the foreign affairs committee today received an official letter from representatives of the sugar refiners asking B hearing for their joint committee As the subject was closed at the last session Williams was unable to give a favorable reply but informed the committee that he would lay the matter before the foreign affairs committee next Friday and endeavor en-deavor to obtain R definite expression A representative of the sugar interest who is stationed in Washington to watch legislation said today that he had informed in-formed his clients there would undoubtedly un-doubtedly be a general revision of the sugar tariff satisfactory to the sugar interest this session Washington 13 Secretary Folger has addressed a letter to the collector of customs at New York on Hawaiian sugar su-gar The following is a copy I have considered the appeal of Watyer Tael Co from your assessment of duty on certain sugar imported by them from Hawaiian Islands After reciting their prcte3tthe secretary says The treaty re ferred to guarantees free importation in ports of the United Slates of Muscavado brown and all other kinds of sugar meaning thereby grades of sugar hereto fore commonly imported from the Hawaiian Ha-waiian Islands and down in the markets of San Francisco and Portland at the time the treaty was passed on Sandwich Hand sugar Samples of the importation importa-tion have been submitted to officers of customs of San Francisco and Portland who declare it to be the grade of sugar which was commonly imported from the Hawaiian Islands prior to the adoption adop-tion of the treaty This sugar is unrefined and was manufactured by the vacuum process and ia of quite a high grade Assuming that tbe question involved is one of fact the weight of evidence submitted sub-mitted ia in favor of the appellant such sugar having been imported from the Hiwaiian Islands both before and since the adoption of the treaty in large quantities quan-tities the appeal is in sustained and you are directed to reliquidate the entry free of duty |
