Show EAST T1NTIC eOIt Something About the Mines and More About the Edmunds Law SILVER CITY EAST TJNTIC JUAB COUNTY UTAH April 19th 1882 Editors Herald East Tintic mining districtthe present pbiding place of your correspondent corres-pondent is just now very quiet A few of the best mines are being worked tbe majority however are I idle waiting the advent of the railroad rail-road The road bed or grade is completed with the exception of a few culverts to the Mammoth Mill southwest of this place about eight miles I am informed that the track will be laid Boulder Spring on the divide between Kush and Tintic Valleys about the 10th of the ensuing month THE MINES The principal mines in this district dis-trict produce milling ore of a high grade but there is a great number of mining properties here which show large bodies of low grade lead ore These ores can only be worked by the smelting process Heretofore Hereto-fore this class of mines has not been worked to any great extent owing to the small amount of silver from twenty to thirty ounces per ton contained in the ore and thereat the-reat expense attendant on the transportation by wagon to points where a market for such ores could be obtained This difficulty will be overcome when the railroad is completed com-pleted The old timers in camp I are on the qui vive and predict a lively time when the iron horse makes its debut in the district some of the more enthusiastic kind assert that Tintic with improved facilities for sending its ores to a competitive market will in the near future be the boss camp of the territory ter-ritory Certainly there are some exceedingly large veins of ore here and several fairly developed mines and others in course of development develop-ment which promise equally well Should the camp meet with no backset it will in a very short I time rank second to none as a bul I ion producing district THE mON MINES In this vicinity there exist large bodies or deposits of iron ore Prom these deposits has come in the past the greater part of the iron ore used by the smelters in fluxing their silver sil-ver ore These mines are principally princi-pally owned by the Utah Iron Company Com-pany and are situated on the eastern side of the ridge between Goshen valley and this place The majority are so situated The Dragon and its extensions claimed by the owners own-ers to be capable of supplying the entire demand is situated on the western slope of the ridge and about oneanda half miles from Silver These iron mines are in my estimation esti-mation destined to bear a prominent promi-nent part among the wealthproduc ing properties of the district THE PANCHRISTIANIC CRUSADE The allabsorbing topic in this sec tion is the Edmunds bill its possi bilities the consequent election commission and its probable influence influ-ence on the material interests of the territory Some whom I have heard express an opinion think the bill uncalled for and absurd the commission a tool and cloak for persecution and that polygamy is but a bugbear fat offices and a chance to manipulate the taxes the real object Others again and these are largely in the majority laud the unjust proceeding to the skies and at the same time do not try to disguise the fact that they believe the special legislation legisla-tion to be unfair and great injustice injus-tice These almost invariably intend in-tend seeking place under the new regime One man on hearing such opinions expressed remarked I know several of them kind of Mavericks Mav-ericks who have got credit off their grocer on the strength of the office they hope to fill One man to his countrys dishonor an Irishman who had a few moments previously been declaiming with bitter eloquence elo-quence against Englands injustice to Ireland and Irelands sons applauded ap-plauded to the echo the news that President Arthur had signed the Edmunds bill and shouted his hope that the Mormons would soon be rooted out of Utah Such is the general sentiment among that class who read the gospel according to the ring organ Aunty Tribune THE MUTTERING STORM If reports from a ring source can be relied upon there is trouble brewing in the ringite camp in fact hairpulling has already occurred The trouble is between rival claimants claim-ants for the fattest offices How extremely ex-tremely utter the spectacle wiil bethe ring scrambling for the chief seat in the synagogue the most lucrative office How the fur will fly when the howlers for morality moral-ity in Utah come to a tussle for the hump ribs of Utahs carcass Methinks Me-thinks I see em cheeK by jowl hands in each others wool claws in their fellows eyes and worst of all characters in their comrade ring ites mouth whilst poor Utah lies helpless and bleeding among the feet of the piratical crew Pandemonium Pande-monium will be in that time esteemed es-teemed a place of quietude the battle bat-tle of Armageddon a love feast and the fight of the Killkenny cats anesthetic esthetic soiree in comparison to the scene and slaughter that will then ensue When the ring crowd come forward for-ward with their usual alacrity to qualify under oath for jurors I opine there will be some squirming and wriggling should the counsel for defendant put the question of their patronage of the socalled necessary f evil I overheard a Gentile who boasts a large circle of acquaintance in this territory say there were not ten men of his acquaintances in Utah if he might except some of the parsons who would not be excused I ex-cused for cause if questioned on this score The question is will the courts rule that illicit intercourse as sufficient cause for excuse If such rule should obtain the commission com-mission will have to import jurors or corrall the majority of the Tribune backers and put them in durance vile as a sort of preparatory training for the duties of jurors AD FINUM Of courseAunty Trib will want to dictate to the commissioners as she has always dictated to the federal officialsthe old Spinster despised dictation on the part of the Mormon leadersand woe betide the unlucky wights if they fail to accept ac-cept her dictation or neglect to lay on the cudgel with the precision and severity she will demand How like a dervish the old Cyprian will howl angered as she is by the Mormon leaders per sistently refusing to permit her to dictate in their concerns and rendered ren-dered ravenous by her failure in the past to secure a share of the tithing tith-ing carrots if the elective commissioners commis-sioners should by any chance have a mind of their own and manhood enough to speak it Their characters charac-ters in such case could not be made blacker if they took a goasyou please roughandtumble with the devils soot bag Their reputations would be torn and tattered like a rotten cloth exposed to the fury of a winter gale But keep quiet try to conciliate the powers that be aid the Edmunds bill all you can for if that should fail to exterminate the people of Utah I forsee a greater evil to come upon them towit the crank Talmage with a big bayonet protruding from between his clerical coattails From all such evils may the good Lord deliver us Amen
