Show u JiIU POLYGAMY i t c nHIcttJ Presents a Bill to Pre cot Poly amists from Hoi ding Office df I I Washington Representative tJ i j Willets of Mich today submitted to the House the bill heretofore l agreed upon by the House judiciary committeeto prevent persons living in bigamy or polygamy from holding hold-ing any civil office of trust profit in anv of the territories of the j United States and from being delegates 1 f dele-gates in Congress Accompanying the bill is a report which declares I that no person shall under authority I author-ity of Congress hold an office who J violates the statute that is justified 5 and demanded by the positive sentiment sen-timent of civilization In conclusion conclu-sion the report says It matters not in our judgment that this violation is excused or defended under un-der the guise of religion your com 7 mittee recognize the fact that this bill falls far short of what the country justly demands and 1 that in many respects we as representatives repre-sentatives of the nation will fail in our duty if we do not prosecute W tit measures lookingto a more radical 4 treatment of an evil which has in I the last fifty years enreuched itself in our political system We propose pro-pose to supplement this with other 3t propositions that may perhaps elicit opposition as too radical but which in our judgment are absolutely considered I con-sidered by the committee In the meantime we propose this measure r which is practical in its character i likely to pass without any considerable consider-able dissent and will L we hope so I commend itself to Congress that it i I I may speedily become law Ji |
