Show CITY COUNCIL Proceedings at the City Council on Tuesday evening November 7 18S2 Mayor Jennings presiding A petition signed by William H Shearman and eight others was presented urgently requesting that the grade boundaries and width of Centre Street and the street on the west side of the old arsenal block be defined as they will be permanently perman-ently established and suggesting that the latter street be made a continuation con-tinuation of the west side of East Temple street The reason assigned for asking speedy action was that some of the resident there desired to improve their properties the present pre-sent month and that it would be impossible to do so till the grade and width of the streets shall be established estab-lished Referred to the committee on streets and alleys Francis Armstrong petitioned to have the agreement existing between be-tween himself and the city in relation re-lation to certain waterpower and land on City Creek so modified modi-fied as to allow him to make improvements and to permanently perma-nently retain possession of the land Referred to a joint committee consisting con-sisting of the committees on waterworks water-works and public grounds B L Benson petitioned to be allowed al-lowed to convey the water of a certain spring at the side of the road near the Warm Springs bathhouse bath-house to his lot on the opposite side of the street Referred to the committee com-mittee on water works The marshal stated that in compliance com-pliance with an order of the council coun-cil he had interviewed the superintendent superin-tendent of the Continental Oil Company Com-pany and notified him of the complaint com-plaint of the Salt Lake Foundry and Machine Company concerning the danger of fire from the two establishments es-tablishments being located in such close proximity and that gentleman had expressed a desire to appear before be-fore tbe Council and make explanations explana-tions The marshal then introduced intro-duced the superintendent who explained ex-plained that the place complained of was used as a delivery depotfor the oil belonging to the Continental n L H vjn Company that cue storehouse store-house located in the Nineteenth Ward was too distant from business portion of the city to be of use for a house from which to deliver to customers The company was not prepared to move the stock at the uptown place this fall and did not intend to do so unless forced by action of the Council The superintendent super-intendent further represented that the oil company was the first in the field and that the danger was not from the oil depot setting fire to the foundry as much as that the fire from the foundry should communicate communi-cate with the oil Referred to the committee on firedepartment The police court report for October Oc-tober was presented by Alderman Speirs showing Number of cases tried 137 cases dismissed 12 cash fines 71610 labor fines S94405 unpaid un-paid fines 4015 Total of cash and labor for month 170030 Approved and placed on file The following bills orOctober were presented for action and allowed Marshals expense bills 823190 Salt Lake City Gas Company for 221 street lamps furnished with gas lighted extinguished and repaired one month at 50 eech per annum 92083 gas bill for City and Fire mans halls and jail 7105 R B Williams for collecting dog tax 81800 A L Williams for car load of coal delivered to City Hall 05 An appropriation of 1750 was made to pay six months interest to Nov 1st 1882 upon the corporation note for 50000 held by Thomas Wardell interest at 7 per cent per annum Alderman Raleigh introduced a resolution to amend the requirement require-ment of a certain other resolution which provides that the auditor shall make a report of the condition of the sinking fund within ten days after the 31st of Octobe and 30th of April of each year which amendatory amenda-tory resolution provided that the time for making said report be extended ex-tended five days making tho term of days fifteen instead of ten The resolution was read regularly adopted and referred for enrollment Adjourned for one week |
