Show TELEGRAPHIC NEWS III CACKLE Hear the Peewee Cackling Jackie f New York 12 Governor Neil of Idaho now here was interviewed yesterday yes-terday by a Tribune reporter on the subject sub-ject of Mormoniem The former said Mormonism is a serious questi n on the Pacific Coast and the Mormons are making special efforts to control the territories ter-ritories outside of Utah where they have already complete master If the press of the country would discuss the question thoroughly a sentiment would soon be created that would compel Congress to act in the matter mat-ter I should also like to say that in the division of parties in Utah in sympathy sym-pathy with Mormons and antiMormons there are no republicans or democrats known as such there and I find among the staunchest antiMormons such men as Judge Uosborou Judge Sutherland Col Samuel Merritt und many other prominent democrats all as hostile as any republican to the prevailing system It is part of the plan of the Mormon church to populate the surrounding territories ter-ritories and states with its adherents with the view of ultimately gaining political po-litical control of them and then by bargaining bar-gaining with either of the political parties par-ties to have the territories admitted as states thus obtaining the balance of power of Congress In my opinion the Mormon church is more of a political than a religious organization and I am convinced that it is a treasonable organization I believe all the members of it who go through the Endowment House take an oath of hostility to the government I have myself heard treasonable trea-sonable doctrines preached in the Salt Lake Tabernacle In my judgment it will be necessary ultimately to deal with the question from this standpoint unless Congress adopts immediately very effectual effect-ual I measures to prevent the practice and spread of polygamy for that is the corner cor-ner stone of the church Polygamy gives all who join the society community of interest in crime and that to is why the priests insist so strenuously on the practice of polygamy They know that interest in crime will strengthen the church and make it better able to accomplish accom-plish its designs Bear Lake County in Idaho is populated exclusively by Mormons Mor-mons The last census gave it a population popula-tion of 3200 Oneida County having the largest representation in the territorial terri-torial legislature is controlled by Mormons Mor-mons who have a population of 4000 out of a total of 7500 In Cossea County they have a number of settlements and are enabled by throwing their votes for those who are friendly to them to decide elections The territory has a population of about 40000 and Mormons number nearly 10000 Mormonism is opposed to all our industries in-dustries particularly to mining which is the greatest interest on the Pacific Slope If Mormons had the power they would not permit an ounce or ore to be mined nor indeed would they allow any persons hostile to their peculiar institution to settle in their midst I am frequently asked how in a free country like this the Mormon priesthood eiereieea i so complete control over the foltewtis of the church It is easy of explanation The Mormon population is made up of tho lowest snd most superstitious super-stitious elapse of foreigners In their own countries thy were accustomed to submit to priestly domination or they lived under despotic governments When brought to America they are put on theca the-ca Q nf Nov YnrV aid taken as rapidly as possible to Utah whore they are placed for settlement in exclusively Mormon communities They have seen nothing and know nothing of American ideas and institutions and are permitted to leara nothing of them They are visited eonstaatly by Mormon priests their conduct ib watched and in fdCt there is the mot complete system of espionage that could possibly bij devised It is not surprisinr then that thy submit willingly wil-lingly to that which they are accustomed torn CIU tries from which they came and again before theycame hero they bad nothing probably which they could call their own After reaching here and declaring their intention to become eiiiwns they take up a home on government govern-ment land In this respect their condition condi-tion is i > nitely better than before and the Mornon church receives in the naiads of these ignorant persons all tne glory and credit for this improvement in their affairs 3 |
