Show Ill I The Railroad Land Question It f Washington GThe members of H t the judiciary committee of tko House propose to go to work at once on the railroad land grant question They have been awaiting I the coming of Mr Knott of Kentucky It I Ken-tucky who arrived yesterday At I l the last session after a ruling the r speaker had apparently disposed of i r + the Northern Pacific laud grant the m question was without action left for this Congress at Knotts advice Other members were added to the committee and they offered anew t I i a-new bill declaring the land H I grant of this road forfeited and it was referred to the judiciary j committee and an early report is expected ex-pected With regard to the bill to I declareforfcited ands itamounts to 700000J acres granted to the Texas Pacific which the committee with r I but one dissenting vote instructed i Mr Reed of Maine to report favorably fa-vorably to the House It is the opinion of some of the members that the public 1 sentiment demands some action upon it During the closing days for f-or the session Mr Heed was ordered f f to report the bill to the house but he pocketed the report and UP to the present there are members of the committee who have not been able to see it It was printed sometime j some-time in September but has not been distiibuung Your correspondent has good authority for the statement state-ment that the secretary of the interior in-terior will exert himself actively to secure action on the laud grant bills pending in committee A promi i neat member of that committee c I udge Payson of Illinois who is on the side of the people said he hoped enough could be obtait e d among f the republicans to add to the democratic t demo-cratic vote in favor of forfeiture of f the grants and to restore to the public domain the greater portion i of the ands now held fraudulently fraud-ulently by these companies I There is no disputing the fact that j there is a stroll railroad inflience f t at work among the member tl rro vent any action tlib bt ssioc tl l fI I fo 1 I j = < J |
