Show i THE TRANSIT I The Fine Weather Prayers Answered New York 6Tbe weather is clear and favorable for a satisfactory observa tion of the transit of Venus London 6 In consequence ot unfavorable unfa-vorable weather the transit ef Venus was totally invisible from Greenwich observatory Chicago GThe weather is beauti fully clear since daylight giving the local lo-cal astronomers a fine chance to observe tho transit of Venus which they are improving im-proving Professor Elias Colbert of the Tribune has made arrangements for a complete scientific observation SmoKed glasses are in the hands of many citizens citi-zens Cincinnati 6Cloud obscured the sun causing great disappointment Boston Notwithstanding the clouds Harvard observatory made satis factory observations of the first and second sec-ond contact in the transit of Venus Ottawa 6Tile observatory here took a successful observation of the transit of Venus intervals this morning St Louis Mo 6Venus was only Been once in the transit for five minutes the weather being cloudy Omaha 6 James Bleckensderfer chief engineer of the Union Pacific took observations of the transit of Verus at Sherman Wyoming the highest point on the Union Pacific in the Rocky Mountains a telegram received here says that at sunrise the heavens were cloudy hut that shortly afterwards the clouds were in a measure dispelled and Venus was distinctly seen upon the disc of the sun It was anticipated by Mr Bleckensderfer that the weather would be favorable for the last points of contact The first points were not visible owbg to clouds tie was well provided with a complete set ol instruments It is now believed that he is the only man on the American conti continent Rent who succeeded in observing the transit and as he is considerable of an astronomer his report will no doubt be of great interest It was cloudy all day in Nebraska Denver 6 Professors Shaw and Howe of the Denver University observed ob-served Venus at its egress all the morning morn-ing The sky was aa dreary and unbroken un-broken in its leaden color as if there had been no sun Later the noro dense clouds passed away but yet the images of the sun and planet were unsatisfactory unsatisfac-tory Albuquerque N M GThe weather is perfectly clear and the transit visible to the naked eye Observations are perfectly per-fectly satisfactory San Francisco 6Later from the Lick Observatory The transit observation observa-tion was made under the most favorable conditions throughout 147 photographs were obtained of which 125 were first class The contacts of egress were successfully suc-cessfully observed San Francisco 6 Professor Davidson teegraphs from Cerrio Eoblero via Los Uruces New Mexico that the day opened beautifully Tho clear sun WAS not one diameter above the mountains when the first internal contact was observed ob-served much later than was predicted The atmosphere of Venus was seen outside out-side the suns limb The second contact was satisfactorily observed the atmosphere atmos-phere growing steady When the altitude alti-tude of the sun was four and a half degrees de-grees micrometer measurements were then made between the limbs of the sun and Venus These were satisfactory During these measurements the first group ol sis photograph plates were exposed ex-posed and gave sharp outlines exhibiting the planet very well defined After the planet had advanced one diameter on the body of the sun the photograph pho-tograph plates were exposed in groups of six every eight minutes These photographs photo-graphs are remarkably fine and no single bitch occurred throughout tho whole series Whilst this work was being done micrometer measures of the polar and equator diameter of Venus were made with a double image micrometer In the equatorial and transit instruments the meridian transit of tbe first limb of Venus and tho last limb of the sun were observed Photograph groups were finished about twenty minutes before the third contact Two hundred and sixteen splendid pictures pic-tures were taken Micrometer measures were taken between the limb of the I planet and of the sun The third contact internal was observed with great precision I pre-cision The limbs of Venus and the sun being remarkably aharp and well defined After this contact part of the planets i dire beyond the suns border was partly surrounded by awhile circle of light The last contact was also observed with great i precision The whole work has been an eminent succca and not a single item has been missed in the pro reOme d thA days operations New York 6Tbe transit Venus was mccesjsully observed here Chicago GAt 11 oclock the clouds began to overcast the sky and obscure the pun causing a stoppage ia tile observation ob-servation of the transit At 6 fully an inch of snow had allen and the storm W general in Wisconsin Iowa and Nebraska Ne-braska At the Dearborn observatory ten photograph pho-tograph were tsken the laet ono at 1115 Nashville 60wiD to the cloudsthe first and second contacts and meridian could not be obtained bat excellent observations ob-servations of the thud and fourth contaCts con-taCts were got Pittsburg 6 At the moment of the first external contact a cloud passed over the sun but from observations bafore and after H was determined that it was 9 ° 053 At an iUerral bate the first external and first internal contact alight a-light 1 was seen gathering into a bright spot extending within the planets due occupying thirty degrees of its circumference circum-ference This phenomenon was not expected ex-pected and the observer was unable to account for it The clouds obscured the pun during tke rest of the day |
