Show Railroad Wreck San Francisco 20It is reported the southern express which left here yesterday yester-day was wrecked near Tehachapi Sev eral were killed and injured No particulars culars San Francisco 20Thero being only one operator at Tebachspi station no press dispatches regarding the railroad Accident are yet received but the following follow-ing was ascertained at the office of the railroad company here Shortly after midnight the overland express oy the Southern Pacific which left hers at 920 a m yesterday stopped near Tehachapi station to cut out an extra engine taken on at Sumner to aEsist in pulling up Tehachapi grade While making the change by some means yet unknown the train got away and started back northward down the grade of 120 feet to the mile The train consisted of two engines express mail and baggage cars two sleepers one coach and smoker It went down the grade at a frightful speed for about four miles when the hindei most sleeper jumped the track and went ewer an embankment about fifteen fet high carrying with it the other sleeper the mail baggage and express car which were piled in a shattered bcaptook fire and were then consumed The coach and smoker kept on the downgrade down-grade and were stopped without leaving the track about two miles farther All on board wereinjured The scene following owing the wreck was terrible A number num-ber > of persons wore jammed amid the ruins of the train and roasted to death before the eyes of those helpless to save them At present it is impossible impos-sible to give the loss of life accurately but it is believed from twelve to fifteen persons > were killed or burned to death The dead EO far as known are Mrs John Cossell wife of a well known mining man burned F W Pierson express messenger a porter of one of the sleepers named Wright was taken outlive out-live but died soon after Lawrence porter of the other sleeper burned It is eared that the wife of ex Governor Downey who with her husband was on the train is among the dead At 10 50 am seven bodies had been taken out earn burned beyrnd recognition The following ore reported injured Mrs Captain T K Brown Miss Ida Brown Le Waterhouse and Mrs 0 L Waterhouse end two children John F Cassell exGovernor Downey the maid of Mrs Porter Ache James Woodall F A Daugherty Mrs P 0 Hatch and Mrs R L Hatch It is a remarkable fact that the wounded are almost without exception but slightly injured The following passengers are unhurt Porter Ache and wife H A Olliver Mrs E Squires and T J Oilier I Oili-er Many are missing and are supposed to have been burned in the wreck and consumed Ashe and wife who ia a daughter of thelate Judge E B Crocker were on their wedding tour They were in the sleeper which first left the track and their escape without injury is almost miraculous A special train has been sent to the scene from Loa Angeles with physicians and an undertaker The dead and wounded will be taken to Los Angeles An-geles Meantime every possible attention atten-tion is paid to them on the ground A wrecking train has arrived from Sumner |
