Show UTAH NAMES How Sanpete Saab and Pettyville Came by Their Titles MAiTr SANPETE Co U T March 26th ISSO Editors HeIiJ I Having re l1 in the SEMIWEEKLY HERALD of the 20th inat your article on Utah Names listing for information infor-mation as to now some of those names were called into existence I thought r might stae how some two I or three of them originated When we first settled this valley I being j among the first settlers in 1849 we j found here a email band of low cles Utes who were poor haying no ponies or lodges as the better class of fries and who etylsd themselves Sanpitchea They were also called by said name by the Utes in general The valley was known and called by al the Ute tribe as San pilch To weep teweep meaning land The main stream of water running through the valley was called by the Indiana Sanpitch Pah pah meaning mean-ing water The valley went by the name of SanDitch Valley until the Legislative Assembly organized the county leaao Morley commonly known as I Father Morley was the president of the firat settlement in said valley and he being a member ol the Legislature Legis-lature at the time tois county was organized be proposed a slight change in the pronunciation of the word SanDitcb then in common use consequently the word San pete was proposed and adopted as the name of the county The word Juab originated in I much the same way as did San pete When Sanpete Valley was first settled there was living in said Juab Valley a small band of Indians similar to the Sanpitches who called themselves and were alto called by the Thee Yo abs The valley wa also known as Yoab Valley and went by said name for several years but on the organization of the county the word was spelled Juab but why the Yo was changed to Ju I am not able to say Pettyville 13 a email village seven miles south of Manti settled some three or four years ago by a few families from Manti among them being the names of Bunce and Petty For some time after its settlement it was known by various names such as Leesburg Buncetown Petty town etc but when the county coutt laid out and organized them a precinct and school district said court styled it Petty procinct Wm G Petty was appointed bishop of said place since which time it has been permanently named Pettyville with a poatoffice of the same name Hoping the foregoing information may be interesting to the rEadera of the HERALD I subscribe myself OLD SETTLER |
