Show The Park City Fatality The funeral of William Mattbev who was injured nt Paik City last Tuesday morning and who died on Saturday afternoon took place from his residence in the Seventh Ward yesterday afternoon there being a large attendance following the remains re-mains to the cemetery A statement of the unfortunate accident was pub lished in the Tribune lshed Tribu1e Sunday morn ing which was about ni accurate as they ever succeed in getting anything there was scarcely a wnrH nt iwfi I I I I in it Hero is the bUtement t wnr of Mr J R Wills the gentleman who was working with him at the time The scene of the accident was the Parleys Park shaft Park City It was between o end 6 oclock in the morning Matthews and Wills just about finishing their shift hey were al the pump about thirty feet from the bottom of the shaft botom fixing the pump nn EO that they could throw the I water irom me tanfc to the surface Before they could do this Mr Wills had tD bring water from the surface into the service pipe in order to get the pump started For this purpose they bad to call cal to the surface u dis tance in the neighborhood of 190 feet and Mr Mathews was going to do the calling The ghalt is divided di-vided into two vded compartment and he put his feet on a centre piece and was going into the other compartment in which the backet worked sod while leaning in the bucket came up and struck him just below t J6 cheek when he fell heavily forward on the ootro ni ° oo ijfa lee in LOu purlin comnartmnnt and his head and body in i the bucket i cJmpartment Mr Wit seeing his danger grabbed him and held him in his arms to keep him from falling to falng to the bottom of the shaft The blow from the bucket knocked him insensible insen-sible and he was a dead weight in Mr Wills arras finding that Matthews was gradually slipping away from him and that ho could not hold him he called to the top for assistance and as the insensible form of Matthews kept slipping Wills let him down as far as he could until he unl dropt him on a tank about three feet below thua preventing him from falling to the bottom of the shaft Mathews hghing on his left shoulder assistance coming he was taken up and when washed and cleaned com paned of a pain in his neck and another in his stomach He was then brought to the city whero ho received every attention but the injuries in-juries sustained were too severe and lie QitU as stated Tfatre was a large attendance of miners from the different camps at the funeral some walking a distance of thirt lro miles through mud and snow which evidences the esteem in which the deceased was held |
