Show The Comet The comet is now visible in the northwest sky on any unclouded evening Since its first discovery on September 3d last by Mr Brooks of Phelps New York it has increased in size and approached ap-proached nearer this earth It is barely discernible to the naked eye but can be plainly seen through a good field or opera glass Its position posi-tion as viewed from this city at 9 oclock pm is a little above and west of Ensign Peak Scientific men have decided that it is the comet of 1812 returned after a period of seventyone years Its nearest approach to our arth will be on January 25th next at which time it will be about 60000000 of miles distant It will not equal the comet of last year either in size or brilliancy but to the scientific has remarkable and unparalleled features It will however how-ever as it approaches become more plainly visible to the unassisted eye Its appearance is that of a confused circular nebulous patch of light shining with great luster and devoid of a tail Its coming has verified the predictions of astronomers seventy years ago who calculated nearly the exact time of its return |
