Show CITY COUNCIL Proceedings the City Council Tuesday evening November 27 1883 Mayor Jennings presiding L E Hall and four others petitioned peti-tioned that the water ditch in the Eighteenth ward at the intersection intersec-tion of First North and First East streets be flumed and covered as in its present condition it was liable at any time to break through its banks and damage theirproperty and it now rendered said streets dangerous for vehicles and pedestrians pedes-trians Referred to the committee on irrigation ir-rigation John A Fitchette asked permission permis-sion to erect a lamp post in front of his place of business No 39 East Temple street the lamp post and lamp to be after the style of a cut whioh he submitted for inspection and to be erected near the curb in a line with other street lamps It was to be illuminated with gas for light and advertising Referred to the committee on im I provements Louis E Bamberger applied for a license to carry on business as auctioneer auc-tioneer throughout the city for the term of six months Granted Application for license to do husiness as retail liquor dealers at their respective houses for a period per-iod of three months were presented pre-sented from A Livingston and Russell Hilton Granted The committee on enrollment reported re-ported that an ordinance passed November 20tb 1883 entitled An Ordinance Extending the Fire I Limits had been enrolled signed by the Mayor and published as pro vided by law Filed A bill of 543 from R B Williams for collecting dog taxes during the months of September and October I 1883 was allowed The sums of 1000 ana 500 were appropriated to the contingent funds of the supervisor of streets and the superintendent of waterworks water-works respectively Councilor Taylor in hehalf of Mr Henry McEwan stated that he formerly for-merly had an entrance to His premises prem-ises situated on First South street between Third and Fourth East streets but had lately disposed of a portion of his land and the only entrance to his place was now obstructed ob-structed by a lamp post that Mr McEwan was at a loss to know how to effect the removal of the lamp to permit ingress to his premises Ou motion Mr McEwan was granted the privilege ot moving the lamp post under the direction of the supervisor of streets On motion the Mayor was authorized author-ized to negotiate with the Union I Pacific Railway company for the purchase of lands in City Creek and Dry canyons A certificate from the watermaster was submitted naming the sections upon which springs occupied by the city are located and which it was deemed expedient to purchase in order to obtain undisputed control of the waters of both canyons from source to mouth and to effectually prevent befouling the waters by herds of sheep cattle and other animals The city attorney suggested that steps be taken to acquire a new city charter from the coming Legislature Legisla-ture conferring additional powers and strengthening and consolidating the powers already held by the city He thought the charter passed by the Legislature of 1882 but not signed by the Governor on account J of lack of time to properly peruse it should be obtained and made applicable ap-plicable to the present wants of the city for presentation to the Legislature Legisla-ture of 1884 Referred to the committee on municipal mu-nicipal laws with the city attorney I associated Alderman Raleigh moved that the Mayor be instructed to require the gas company to extend their gas mains northward so as to conform to the report of the committee on I improvement heretofore adopted Harried I The unfinished business of former meecings was taken up and action taken as follows Applications of Geo M Scott Co Hardy Bros Burton Evans Spencer and Thos Carter for permits per-mits to sell black powder according to the provisions of ordinance made and provided were granted Petition to sprinkle West Temple between South Temple and First South petition of Henry Allsworth I and others and E A Ireland in relation re-lation to oil warehouses petition of A L Williams and others for extension of water mains and petis = feion of John Reese in relation to fruit stand were laid on the table indefinitely Adjourned for one week |
