Show How the Poncus were Robbed New York 10The Times says Rp esentative Decrine has introduced a bill to compensate the Pone It dians or lands from which they were wantonly expelled ex-pelled in 1877 The bill appropriate 1180000 part of which is to be used for the immediate wants ofthe Indians put for the purchase of a reservation and the remainder is to be funded for their ben edt annually for ever We may suppose sup-pose the whole amount is to be accepted as payment for the 96000 acres of land in Dakota formerly occupied by Poaca and which was ceded to them by solemn treaty I3y a blunder in making the Sioux treaty of 1868 the Ponca tract was ceded to the Sioux and the Fences were driven down to Indian Territory where great numbers of them died in cong guenco of the change in climate The Ponea reservation has never been occu pel by the Sioux or by any other people peo-ple The Poncas are on a tract belong log to the Cherokees from whom it is proposed to buy the new reservation So far as the Poncas have been able to make their wants known they are most anxious anx-ious to go back to their own country If here is any good reason why they should not be sent back and their lands restored lo them nobody authorized to speak for government has made that reason public |
